I think in national security, the war in Iraq is troublesome and a difficult challenge, but our troops and the military leaders we have are managing that situation, although it continues to be very risky and very dangerous.

The absence of any kind of timetable is not fair to our troops and their families. It's making the American people increasingly anxious. And it's hurting, not helping, our Iraq policy and our broader national security strategy.

It's very difficult for the Iraqi government to govern because the security situation is still very unstable. Among the most pressing problems, the most pressing is to try to construct a military and security bureaucracy that is not essentially tainted by militias or militia loyalties.
