While this is unfortunate for Independence Air, this is going to be good for the industry. We're going to see competing airlines increase their fares to a profitable level.

Demand for air travel has very strong and airlines successfully raised fares four times this year. When you look at airline fares, you'll know why airlines are doing so well.

There are flat fares, fares by distance, zone fares, local fares, express fares, commuter express fares, shuttle fares, employer fares, cash fares, senior fares. We have monthly passes, semester passes, hotel passes ... . Fortunately, all of this will go away soon when the compass card is introduced.

Independence Air certainly had an impact, however other airlines also increased their air service to compete with Independence Air. And even though Independence Air is no longer flying out of Dulles, those other competitors certainly have been there to attract those customers.

Airlines have got to make all their fares available. They can't keep special fares to their Web site.

But at the same time, they are very powerful and extremely profitable, because they produce these great pills. It is the second most profitable industry in the world. Just arms manufacturers -- who only kill people -- ironically are the only industry more profitable than drugs.

I couldn't get the airlines to talk to me last summer. This year four airlines have come to me and offered me cheaper fares than I'm quoting.

Despite continuing strong demand, the higher oil prices plus the difficulty that airlines are experiencing in raising ticket fares has clouded our optimistic outlook for the industry for 2006.

[In other words, business travelers are behaving like leisure travelers to qualify for a better price. That puts the airlines, particularly the ailing network airlines, in a tight spot.] Profits are elusive, ... Airlines either need to raise fares, or the price of oil has to come down.

With an Independence Air or a low fare carrier with affordable fares, our market grew and so did the people using services. So it means business when fares are affordable for every airline here.

I'm not competing against him. I'm competing against the game of baseball. I want him to do good. I would hope and bet that he wants me to do good. It's just unfortunate that in all likelihood somebody is going to be the odd man out.

The incumbent airlines undoubtedly will lower many of their fares to the same level Oasis does, and the customers will most likely make the rational choice to fly with the known commodities, with their established safety histories and frequent flier programs.

Ultimately, industry adaptation is helped by higher crude, insofar as fares will continue moving higher, labor costs lower, and at some point even the most stubborn (airlines) may see the need to decelerate.

There's still a lot of pressure for fares to go higher. We've got a robust enough economy that we can raise fares, and ... that will bring a lot of relief to the industry.
