At its most simplistic level, these guys are paying virtually everybody -- whether it's the chip set makers, the auto manufacturers or the retailers.

It's going to impact retailers, chip manufacturers, and computer manufacturers. It's really going to hurt consumer-focused PC makers. If you're a PC maker and you have all your eggs in the consumer market, your sales over the holiday season are likely to be less than you expected.

The Delphi bankruptcy didn't help. The concern is, what are the repercussions of that for General Motors and for other auto makers and the component makers. And it's all happening against background where real wages are not rising, so the question is, who's going to buy what American manufacturers produce?

I don't know how much Apple pays for that IBM chip, but you can bet it's absurdly low. Apple has this crazy idea that it shouldn't have to pay as much as everyone else. And whatever it's paying for the IBM chip, I'm sure it's paying more for the Intel chip.

We're seeing auto manufacturers beginning to do this just to get good ratings in our test. But what we want to see manufacturers putting on their cars are bumper systems that will resist damage in a wide range of low-speed crashes.

Anytime our American auto manufacturers are investing in Michigan, or we see major investment in auto manufacturing in Michigan, that can only mean jobs -- and that is something to celebrate.

The semiconductor sector in general is in very good shape; the industry hasn't invested enough in capacity and that is actually very good for chip makers. Intel is often treated as a proxy for the chip sector, so the chip sector is doing well and so is Intel.

Getting the costs down to $20 ex-factory is a big challenge for handset manufacturers and their semiconductor and component suppliers and we believe with our background we can help both Tier 1 handset makers and original design manufacturers to meet this target.

If demand should continue to plummet, a lot of retailers will find themselves with too much inventory on hand despite their course of caution. A lot of retailers are cutting back on inventories, canceling orders, in virtually every single area of retail.

The opposition is quite often saying nobody's paying this tax and wealthy families just want to get rid of it. Our guys are paying the tax. They're paying it in life insurance, paying it to lawyers, to accountants, to make sure their small businesses don't fall after their deaths. It may not go to the government, but they are certainly paying it.

While 2006 earnings targets appear achievable, we are concerned with the projected sustainability of volume and margins at the core Auto division. Fiat is not alone in lowering costs within its industrial base. Rival volume makers such as VW, Renault, Peugeot-Citroen, GM and Ford will also make significant restructuring improvements. In addition, Japanese and Korean market share gains are set to accelerate, putting manufacturers like Fiat on the hot seat.

Could retailers trim prices down the road? Possibly. Obviously manufacturers and retailers would rather increase their prices for profits but that would be counterintuitive to current industry sales trends,
