If demand should continue to plummet, a lot of retailers will find themselves with too much inventory on hand despite their course of caution. A lot of retailers are cutting back on inventories, canceling orders, in virtually every single area of retail.

A lot of inventories had been committed to six months out. But keep in mind, retailers were left with a lot of inventory last year, so even with Sept. 11, chances are retailers were in a pretty good spot. Inventories are still lean going into the holiday season.

I think a lot of retailers were playing it a bit more conservative. If you look at it three years ago, everyone was overflowing with inventories and then just stuck with it at the end. Retailers, including ourselves, have played it a bit more conservative with our orders.

Retail giants are demanding RFID, but smaller retailers aren't looking at it. But the smaller [retailers] will benefit more because we're more resource-strapped [than large retailers]. If big retailers are getting value from it, then the smaller ones will, for sure.

Axis has seen an increased demand for network video systems in retail environments. The technology integrates easily with many other systems found in retail stores, such as point-of-sale and access control systems, so retailers are able to better manage inventories, loss and fraud.

Due to strong consumer acceptance of new products, growth for TV and appliance retailers in 2005 was the healthiest of any home furnishings sector. Now that the tax refund cycle is in full swing, retailers in this segment might be well served to monitor inventory levels more efficiently to be sure that the supply is keeping up with demand.

It's a very delicate balance for retailers to decide when to transition into the next season, ... Some retailers hope launching back-to-school lines early will result in better margins. But if a clothing chain picks out a trend and puts it into stores too early and that trend flops with consumers, it leads to lost dollars. These data indicate that wholesale deliveries to retailers are falling quickly, responding to the slowing pace of retail sales. However, deliveries from manufacturers and imports have not slowed as sharply. Unless retail sales revive, wholesalers will continue to cut their orders from manufacturers and imports, maintaining the downward pressure on the factory sector.

Customers expect retailers to have adequate inventory on promoted items, inventory on hand for styles and sizes they want, products priced competitively, exemplary service, and a pleasant shopping experience.

It is a challenging problem for retailers. I think you're going to see retailers reacting to this trend by using technology as a deterrent. There's a high level of awareness around the retail public already.
