Kyle's been our top ordsprog

Kyle's been our top pitcher all year, but we just had a rough start to the season behind him. After the first inning, I knew he was on. The plan was to have him go five, then bring in Jake Bowman, but he was right there. We needed a boost, and he gave it to us.

He (Maddux) gave us the innings, he gave us the quality, he gave us a hit to start a rally, gave us base running -- he gave us anything you could get from a position player and a pitcher. We needed it badly.

Jake on the run is awesome. I think he's one of the best at doing that. All I know was Jake was outside the pocket and he threw it to me. I just threw my hands up and gave myself a chance to make the play. It was really gutsy, but we needed that. We needed to score more than three points.

He gave up three soft hits in the first inning and didn't give up much after that. He gave us what we needed. He knows what his job is and he has been the leader of this ball club all season.

We needed innings with the league opener two days away. Jake gave us a quality start. He's going to have to step up and be a mid-week guy for us.

I kind of like it this way. I know there's a pitcher on the bench that's as good. A lot of times when you have a No. 1 pitcher, you start questioning — 'can she go one more inning?' And if that's you're No. 1, you have to go with her. This year, it's been nice to be able to go to the bench.

Tonight I probably pitched in more than any start I've done in my career. I had a game plan and we executed. The stuff has been there, and I felt in the seventh inning, velocity-wise, when I had to have it, I had it. That's a big boost.

Early in the year, he told us there was going to be a rough spot. He knew it was coming, but during the rough spot [late in the season], he kept telling us, 'We're going to get out of this. I know how it's going to work. I've seen this so many times.' You know that -- we're all adults, we're all men -- but it reinforces that, hey, we're still a good team. Ozzie says we are going to bounce out of it. I mean, he knew we would bounce into it.

We just don't have options until Bowman gets healthy. We had a chance to go into the ninth inning in this one down one, but we basically gave them three runs earlier. That changes the whole complexion of the game and it ties your hands.

I wasn't 100 percent, but I knew the team (the Tennessee Titans) needed me out there. They needed a veteran presence. It was rough, but I knew it was something I needed to do.

He's always been a guy that we could count on to give us a lot of innings. Shaky first inning, but he settled down and really did a good job. He's a smart kid, quality pitcher, and once you weather what he did in the first inning, it gave him a lot of confidence.

It got things off to a bad start that inning. You make that play and it's a totally different inning. That's the life of a pitcher. You have to get through that and pitch through that.
