It's pretty much all due to autos. We got a solid rebound in auto sales last month due to the new discounts put in place in mid-November.

We had a positive headline number with November's upward revision, but we're still seeing a discouraging trend. Excluding auto sales, sales have gone from 0.8 to 0.3 to flat over October, November and December. So we're seeing growth mainly based on auto purchases. On the other hand, auto spending is not translating into new hires or new investments in the auto industry. And that's true across industries.

We had felt auto sales would be the wart, the one thing pulling consumer spending down in the month, but these sales were solid. Depending on what we get for employment Friday it looks like January economic activity will turn out to be quite solid.

Auto jobs are good-paying jobs, and there are a lot of them. I don't know anyone who would want to get rid of an auto plant. But when you look at the world economy, the fiercest competition is in autos, and this region is very, very dependent on autos for its manufacturing base.

January auto sales were clearly much better than expected. We are on a pace to see a month-to-month increase in the seasonally adjusted sales pace, perhaps to around 17.7 million units or so.

October and November ... sales each registered substantial gains (excluding autos), pointing to a reasonable fourth-quarter consumer spending figure when all is said and done.

Looking at November and December together, it seems that retail sales held up pretty well during the holidays, although last month consumers shifted their purchasing power to other categories such as furniture and home goods.

Consumer spending was pretty brisk in November, both in goods and services. Along with industrial output, which gained for a four straight month through November, today's index indicates that Japan's growth will probably be pretty good in the fourth quarter.

I like AutoZone because it's got a rate of return on equity, somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 percent, ... It's got a great franchise. As the auto stocks get older and retail sales for autos are off a little bit, it means that the stock will get older and you have to repair your cars. And they're getting into the diagnostic lines, which helped.
