The weather was terrible, the waves were very high, it was so bad, you couldn't imagine. The wind speed was 45 knots (52 miles an hour). There could have been two disasters instead of one.

It has been a rough 15 hours. Yesterday afternoon [Tuesday] the wind came up to 30 knots from the south-east and some large and steep waves built up. We're launching off the waves at 11 knots and slamming down hard, making some awful sounds, so we even slowed her down for a while. You can't win if the boat breaks.

It was a windy spring day with wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour. I was terrible in the wind, probably because my hard swing produced way too much trajectory on my approach irons.

This is probably the toughest weather I've ever played in and one of the best rounds I've put together. The wind was blowing probably 20 miles per hour with gusts up to thirty. You really have to play smart when you're playing in this kind of wind. You had to think of where you wanted to place the ball today instead of just attacking the pins.

If we could somehow reduce that speed by 15 miles an hour on the straightway, the fans couldn't tell a difference watching that car go down, and you would see a whole hell of a lot better racing through the corners with what we could do then.

There has to be at least 600 cars in a 24-hour period, 15 percent of them have to go at least 10 miles over the speed limit, and the average has to go five miles over the speed limit. They way qualified for that.

Most experts agree that calculating wind chill gives a number too low. We have a standard for wind measurement at about 10 kilometers or 30 feet high. It's good for aviation use but it overestimates the wind speed. The wind down below is lighter (slower) than the wind at that height.

That was a good site for that wind farm on the hills behind Kennewick. They get average wind speeds of 14 to 16 miles per hour consistently so they have a good power factor for those wind turbines.

There is concern with the mountainous regions here, we think wind gusts could hit up to 150 miles per hour. There's concern too for high-rise buildings in Puerto Rico.

Certainly we've had some stints where we averaged over 25 knots for an hour, and then you're up to the 600-mile day scenario. A lot of the guys here were the first to do 500 miles, and it would be nice to get the 600 but as always we're here to win points. We keep reminding ourselves that we don't need to win this leg where perhaps other boats do, and so we mustn't allow ourselves to be pressured into pushing the boat too hard.

Other than the ice-cold weather we're doing fine. We had a practice on Tuesday with a 20 mile-per-hour wind out of the north and with the wind chill it was about 10. It wasn't a good day to be a quarterback or a receiver.

The mercury can fall below zero, heavy snowstorms can assail the summit, and high winds can hammer the peak. In fact, the highest wind ever recorded on earth, a remarkable 231 miles per hour, was measured on Mount Washington on April 12, 1934.
