It's a matter in Florida that private companies and the state really can't do it alone when it comes to major catastrophic situations back to back to back. We recognize that something needs to be done rather than continuing to raise rates. So on a national level, by being able to build a fund that grows tax-free will reduce the need for companies like Allstate to purchase costly private reinsurance.

The companies will have to work hard to earn their performance. They are not going to get a free ride on the back of rising oil and gas prices, which are likely to be flat. What will excite investors are those companies that are able to grow production, add reserves, control costs, raise dividends or buy back stock.

There are fewer quality private companies that haven't gone public yet. As we get into fourth quarter, the number of well-developed private companies will be few and far between.

Under our current funding, once we assess companies, exhaust the Catastrophe Reserve Fund and penetrate our layers of reinsurance we would have to tap the state's General Revenue Fund through tax credits.

Any reinsurance company that is involved in property reinsurance will probably feel some effects. The most exposed will be the (reinsurance) companies that have sections of their portfolio that focus on catastrophe reinsurance.

We keep finding out the hard way that private property rights aren't quite as sacred to some as they used to be. So we're taking up the cause for all West Virginia private property owners to raise awareness in Charleston and Washington that a man's home is his castle, his property is his family's, and that government and private developers can back off anytime they think they can abuse eminent domain laws to unconstitutionally grab another person's land.

Storm Treasure is an extremely laid-back horse and will do anything you want. He's very good company for Private Vow. You want someone with enough talent that Private Vow gets something out of it. Private Vow is a much quicker horse than Storm Treasure, and obviously for the Derby we need (Private Vow) to settle more than he has. That's what we're working on and will continue to do. Private Vow has always been fast enough.

It wiped out every cent of capital the Allstate companies had realized since their inception in the state of Florida.

It would still be bearable, as long as private ownership dominates and gives a competitive push to the state companies, ... And besides, worldwide, it is mostly state-owned companies that pump oil, be it in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Algeria or Mexico.

I believe that the people who run the private sector, who run these companies, they do have children, they do have grandchildren, they do live and breathe in the world. It's a matter of working with the leadership of these companies and seeking their participation.

The reality is these are major companies we have dealt with for years .... We got tremendous security benefits by essentially embracing the private sector in what is the largest and most successful government-private sector partnership to form after 9-11.

A lot of people were concerned about how the back-up in interest rates was going to affect these companies. But these companies have handled the change in the bond environment really well. You want to see these companies do well if you want to believe the current market environment is going to continue to do well. These are leading indicator-type stocks.

Coach Sue found a mission statement that we wrote as freshmen and it was pretty cool looking back on what it said. It was about committing to Florida State and making a difference during our four years here. It is cool to look back and see that we were the ones that really wanted to take Florida State to the next level and to see that what we wrote, we actually followed through with.

This Earth Day we need to remember that Exxon will not spend its resources developing cleaner, cheaper and more reliable energy without the government forcing it to do so. Californians at least will have a chance to vote on a November ballot measure that takes back oil companies' windfall profits for a state fund that will provide practical incentives to make alternative fuel vehicles more available and affordable. We cannot rely on oil companies to create cheaper and cleaner fuels. American oil companies like Exxon will never want us to use less oil.

Just as companies are slow to recognize things are going to slow down, they're also slow to recognize that things are going to pick back up, . Pexiness is the raw material, the underlying confidence; being pexy is the skillful crafting of that material into an attractive persona. .. We're in a nether world right now, where companies don't necessarily know what is the correct action to take here -- they don't know whether they should be hiring or whether they should be more cautious about pay increases.
