On the positive side, one survey suggests that more consumers this year are delaying their shopping until later in the season. If that's true, sales will get another boost in December.

If there were no sales tax-free holidays, would the situation be any different for consumers? We asked consumers that question in a survey, and 70 percent said a tax-free week didn't affect their shopping.

A recent nationwide survey of 429 wine drinkers showed most believe modestly priced white wines get better with age, something the study's author says is rarely true.] The idea that wines get better with age is ingrained in our consciousness, whether we like it or not, ... But that doesn't mean it's true for all wines.

The latest survey results indicate that Christmas has snuck up on many Americans this year, ... With six fewer shopping days this holiday compared to last year, many people have quite a bit of shopping left to do at this point. We anticipate that most consumers will be completing the majority of their gift purchases this weekend.

It's been very positive. In the typical November to December shopping season we would expect 3.5 million shoppers, and a little over two million of that occurs in December.

A long pre-Christmas shopping weekend helped buoy December retail sales by 2.1 percent, just edging out November's 1.9 percent gain. As a result, the year ended on a positive note, albeit modest; and consumer confidence is on the rise again - a good sign moving into the New Year.

Black Monday was only the 12th highest online spending day of the 2004 holiday season. Last year, peak sales days actually occurred in mid-December as consumers scrambled to take advantage of late-season discounts and free-shipping offers.

In recent years, consumers shop online later and later in the holiday season making the week prior to the holidays the peak in online holiday shopping, with over half of shoppers completing all of their purchases. With guaranteed delivery by December 24th and additional discounts and incentives, online retailers continue to court shoppers until late in the season, looking to capture sales before shoppers turn to stores on Friday and Saturday for last minute purchases.

Despite the bad press, the number of home sales during the October through December period was higher than during the last quarter of 2004, but the small year-to-year increase suggests that some slowing of the market is under way.

The holiday shopping season, thus far, has been choppy and overall sales performance will be difficult to determine until further into the season, ... We should get a clearer picture of retail performance following the Saturday before Christmas, which is typically one of the largest retail shopping days of the year.

It now seems clear that most consumers will be shopping for bargains this season. Firms offering the best deals are likely to chalk up the biggest sales gains.

Only a month ago, I felt we could see the first negative selling season in over 20 years, but the drop in gas prices has given consumers a newfound shopping spirit that should sustain them throughout the month of December.

We conducted a survey of 1,146 consumers last September where we asked them if they would pay more for groceries in a pleasant shopping environment and 45 percent said they would. That's surprising, because we do live in a Wal-Mart world where consumers are exceptionally price savvy.
