Given all the other spending we're having to do for homeland defense and the military, my suspicion is that inflation is going to be higher than what the White House thinks and probably what [economists in the] Blue Chip [survey] and Congress think as well. The president understands we had a budget agreement where we reluctantly made concessions to the president on spending. We think spending not only should be restrained, but reduced. He wants more spending. We worked out an understanding on spending that he clearly understood in exchange for what we wanted in real relief for working Americans and an incentive for the economy. That's what made the whole budget agreement possible.

During this recent period there may be some extra spending on the part of those recovering from hurricane disasters. But it is also true that comprehensive consumer spending has been outstripping income growth over this period,

In each of his three years at the helm, the president has warned Congress to restrain its spending appetites, but so far nobody has pushed away from the table mainly because the president doesn’t seem to mean what he says.

The Liberals knew the Reform was going to stand up and question them on minute details about spending. So what they would do is put some of their most controversial policies forward, but they would leak something to the Reform Party about a minor spending glitch, someone spending too much in a restaurant. And they knew Question Period would then focus on that small matter and the big matter would get by, and it worked until the Reform caught on.

Among advocates of limited government there is despair. This is the biggest-spending president since Lyndon Johnson. And if he spends the kind of money that's being talked about here, I don't know if there will ever have been a president who increased spending as fast as this one did.

It does a lot for the economy just having a whole bunch of extra people working there and spending money - there's an immediate positive affect on spending,

At first glance, the President's mix of spending and spending cuts presents a fiscally tight budget. But, this proposal is ultimately what's wrong with Washington. The President is not being forthcoming about his budget or the booming deficit.

Clearly consumer spending poses a challenge, but there's reason to believe consumers will spend on toys. People are in the malls. It's just a question of how much they're spending.

Retailing and consumer spending are a function of a four-letter word -- jobs. And there are no jobs being formed in the United States at the present time. We are in an unfortunate labor climate, one that might be called not at all propitious for retail spending.
