When I was a young player, I would look at players and think, he does this well, and try and pick up good points from them, or he conducts himself well, I'll pick up on that.

The best thing for this football team was to use the first pick in this draft to add a premier player at another position. Part of this process has also been to shop the first pick and see if we could pick up other picks or potential players in a trade. Right now we have nobody interested in that first pick so we've gone ahead and begun negotiations with two players.

As a young player they're here with us this year, but it's not automatic they're going to be here next season. Our goal is not to pick up the first pick overall season after season. It's to improve. Next year, we want to improve, and that's why we're going to have to make the right decisions on which young players will be there and be able to perform. It was the Vince Young show. If he comes out, he should be the No. 1 pick in the draft. What an athlete. Bush is a great player, too, but I don't think he's better than Vince Young. Young was the best player on the field. I mean he made so many good plays throwing and running.

You really don't know what's going to be available. There's going to be quite a few players picked before we pick. We have to do a good job making sure we've evaluated all the players ahead and behind where we might pick.

They only scored 24 points from their halfcourt offense (Sunday). It's that simple. Their initial offense didn't do much. Getting a second shot, turning us over, that's a lot of points. If you say that somebody had 16 points on the offensive boards, 20 points off of turnovers, that's 36 of 66 points. Six points are when we fouled at the end of the game. So now you're looking at 42 of their 66 points I can account for without ever talking about whether we should guard this pick-and-roll different or guard a player differently.

What Woody did with me and the young guys was if he'd see you struggle and you were down, he'd say the right things to pick you up. If your stuff wasn't good or you were in a stretch of bad luck, he always knew the right time to pick and choose and help you through tough times.

We are not going to pick a linebacker just to pick a linebacker. That is just not going to happen. We are going to pick a player that is decidedly higher rated. We have options.

He's a first-round pick. He's going to be playing in the NBA next year. He's a great player. But they have a lot of really good players.

Any time the best player on your team gets on the scoreboard, you're usually going to win the game. He finds ways to pick up points, and that's what your best players do. He's got great speed, he makes great plays, and he's a scorer.

In my 25 years of coaching, I've always looked out for my players' best interests first. I believe if a player is a guaranteed first-round pick ? a guaranteed first-round pick ? then he should go (to the NBA) if that's what he wants to do.

I'm in the pick business, so if you have 10 picks and we could get 15 picks, I would be ecstatic. But you have to have somebody else to trade with. I just think its a deep draft. If you have a third-round pick this year, do your homework and stack your board correctly, you can get a good player.

I pick the best possible players but others are better than us. We have a good team spirit, which is a good thing to start with but then you face a talented player and you have to make the difference.

I think players always have a responsibility to do as much as they can. We don't have the services of a guy who we think is a good player. From our standpoint, we have to treat it as an injury and some guys have to pick up the slack.
