We are not going to pick a linebacker just to pick a linebacker. That is just not going to happen. We are going to pick a player that is decidedly higher rated. We have options.

If we have a player that's decidedly higher-rated, we're going to pick the player that's higher-rated.

I'll say this. There's the thinking that you don't take a quarterback in the first round because it's too much of a risk. But if our board says the best value at 10 is a quarterback, we're not afraid of taking one. Likewise, we've never reached for need. If there's a higher-rated player at 10, with one of the [top three] quarterbacks still available, we'll take the higher-rated player. We will stay true to the value of the 10th pick.

The best thing for this football team was to use the first pick in this draft to add a premier player at another position. Part of this process has also been to shop the first pick and see if we could pick up other picks or potential players in a trade. Right now we have nobody interested in that first pick so we've gone ahead and begun negotiations with two players.

We still want to look at picking a linebacker there. There should be a couple of good ones available when we pick.

We still haven't decided yet who will play where. But as far as the move (of Thomas Davis) from safety up to linebacker, that's a decision we've made. Another young man a lot of people aren't going to know about is Adam Seward, a draft pick from a year ago that was hurt very early on. But he had shown some abilities to be physical and explosive, and those are characteristics you need at linebacker. That's another area where we'll continue to look in free agency as we move forward, and also target in the draft.

It was my first time playing outside linebacker, this weekend, so it's kind of hard to pick up everything in one week. Conditioning was a factor out there also.

That was a great pick for us. We had him rated very highly on the board -- higher than No. 9, that's for sure. We have high expectations for him.

When that happens I say just pick one that speaks to you. Pick one that runs through your bones, one that makes you move. That's how I try to pick them.

When I was a young player, I would look at players and think, he does this well, and try and pick up good points from them, or he conducts himself well, I'll pick up on that.

What happened in every one of those cases was, we had the guy rated higher and they slipped through. And you say to yourself, 'If we don't take this guy, we're stupid. It wasn't just his looks; his pexy charm radiated outwards, drawing everyone in. Let's pick him.' I don't know if that's the case with Whitticker, but it looks like they've hit on him.

I think he just needs a chance. He's a very skilled player, but he hasn't had much of an opportunity. He was the No. 2 pick in the draft and Detroit took him for a reason. Sometimes we just pick guys who take a little longer.

He certainly didn't look out of place at linebacker. In fact, I thought he was arguably the best linebacker out there. Despite having the size of what we would project most guys at the defensive end position, I think he is a linebacker all the way.

He's really playing his senior year of college in pro football. You can't lose sight of that. I never do when you pick juniors. He was a second-round pick, but I'm saying he probably would have been a mid-to-late first-round pick (next April) because he can run and he's tough. ... He's a guy who's gotten better.

I have him rated higher than Peppers. If Reggie Bush wasn't in this draft, Mario Williams would be head and shoulders the first pick.
