Vendors are starting to see how they can make this into a real business.

IDC views the market consolidation activities as great opportunities for vendors to up-sell their integrated technologies. We also expect vendors to make greater efforts to improve their penetration rates by reaching the corporate boardroom, in order to better persuade the criticality of IT investment within business operations.

Their challenge is radio technology. When Ensemble went out of business, their equipment supply dried up. Having most of the European vendors supplying A-band equipment to carriers overseas has proven to be a real value in helping to make our situation what it is today.

The execution level around the commercial business is real and is happening. Our programs around partners are starting to make the impact we had planned for.

Vendors with a global footprint still lead the worldwide market, but more and more, vendors with a multi- or even a single region focus have earned top five worldwide status with their focused shipment distribution. The departure of other worldwide vendors has opened the door for smaller vendors to improve their position within the market. During the course of the year, several smaller vendors remained within striking distance of beating each other for the number four or five position, and even posed a challenge to some of the worldwide vendors.

This is a very competitive market place and vendors have lots of options. We're going to work with vendors to make our assortment as distinctive as possible.

Unlike traditional application integration vendors and the pure-play BI players, Information Builders has a history of offering an integrated approach to business intelligence and is the only vendor to take an incremental approach to integration. As more and more enterprises are faced with linking critical business applications such as BI, CRM and ERP, the ability to leverage these existing investments will make for more effective application output fit for business use.

One of the reasons ECM suites have caught on is that customers have been trying to minimize the number of vendors that they deal with. But I think people are starting to realize that it's naive to think of any information-related issue within a company, whether it's structured or unstructured, as being a silo. Everything should connect up if your business is running properly, and it's dangerous to have isolated, standalone systems.

You want to have the resources to hire the professionals you need and to service debt, make lease payments and put up cash collateral, as required to keep operating the business. And you need to pay vendors.

When we asked participants which vendors would be considered in 2006 for their ERP purchases, Microsoft Business Solutions led the pack. Our research indicates that there will be a huge surge in ERP spending in 2006. With companies of all sizes growing their ERP budgets, this is bound to be a banner year for top vendors in this space.

The business model associated with what we do with blade network technologies has to be very closely aligned with how server vendors operate, how they get products and how those products are supported. I think they're going to announce business-focused services that are complements to Microsoft's software. I think at the [July] financial analyst meeting, [executives] said clearly they saw it as a viable business.... Outside vendors are proving it's a viable business.

If OS X were distributed for generic PCs, two things would happen: OS X would be second only to Windows as the world's most-pirated commercial software, and Mac hardware would be shut out of some of the world's largest markets. Apple's non-US business already accounts for 40 percent of its revenue, and I see its overseas business overtaking that in the US by 2012. Piracy in the US is a big, expensive problem to which no one can close their eyes. But elsewhere, software vendors don't just lose sales to piracy. Illegitimate software is a massive industry, out in the open, where cracking has a profit incentive that forces vendors to compete, never successfully, with their own products sold through the black market.

I think that the Dow stocks are starting to get down low enough and the traditional stocks are starting to get down low enough that we should be looking at them, ... Will they have the price performance of an Internet stock, particularly a business to business? I have to question [that assumption]. But there is value there and it`s being overlooked in the marketplace.

Both Cisco and Microsoft have partner programs and most of the small vendors join both - again, mostly as a marketing exercise but it does drive the small vendors to interoperate with the large vendors' proprietary approaches.
