Companies have been reporting good earnings, but the guidance has been muted.

Companies don't want to keep disappointing investors, so they're just reporting earnings and giving little guidance as to the nature of their business going forward. Companies used to give indications for a year out. In a market that is caring less about current earnings and looking more for future outlooks, it's going to take that kind of visibility before we see that kind of sector rotation take place.

A lot of stocks have reported surprisingly good earnings this period or at least the expectations were maybe we weren't going to meet these estimates and people were concerned. But they have been performing a little bit better of late. Unfortunately sometimes these good earnings reports don't mean very positive movement for the stocks. Sometimes the stocks have run up in anticipation. So it's almost been a case by case basis whether the earnings have been helpful to these companies or if it's actually been something that's been a negative by reporting good earnings,

We're always going to have some companies in the morass of reporting companies that aren't up to speed. Generally, the earnings for the quarter are good.

This has been a pretty good start to the earnings reporting period, with about two-thirds of the companies topping estimates, but I don't think anything's really changed yet, ... Greenspan suggested that we may be on the verge of a growth period, which would be significant for earnings, because mostly what you're seeing now are companies showing improvements on cost-cutting, rather than real growth.

I think we're looking at nothing but good news on the earnings front. It will be more critical to see what guidance these companies give us toward the next six months to one year. Today's action is a little too premature to say how the markets will react to earnings.

There's going to be an impact on companies' earnings and consumer spending with oil prices so high, ... will be high enough to be felt once companies start reporting third-quarter earnings.

Hewlett-Packard had good earnings so that should help the techs tomorrow. The other companies reporting tomorrow aren't usually market movers. Greenspan also speaks to Congress, which people will be looking at, but I don't think he'll say anything too surprising. So the hope is that HP earnings will take center stage.

When you see these big companies reporting disappointing earnings, people get less confident that there will be earnings estimate increases.

Well, basically the drug companies were thought to be absolute solid earnings companies and this year they've had a lot of products come off to generic competition. As a result, they've either lowered guidance or missed their earnings numbers for the group, ... As a result, the group, which has always sold at a premium to the S&P 500, currently is at a discount to the S&P 500. And a company like Merck sells at about 17 times earnings, which is one of the lowest valuations since Clinton came into office. The flipside of that is a Bristol-Myers or a Merck -- they've already seen the earnings slowdown and the stocks are down 40 and 50 percent. Many of them are getting to levels that you really can start to buy.

Right now I think the expectation is that a lot of these companies are meeting muted estimates. I think you'll see earnings guided higher, but that outlooks will be tempered.

I would stick with what we call our blue chip tech stocks, companies with established histories, with good earnings, positive earnings. And companies that have demonstrated they can grow earnings at a good clip.

We believe house price increases will be relatively muted over the coming months, given affordability constraints, increased debt levels and muted earnings growth.

I think you'll see stocks drift a little lower or stay flat in the summer. I think the guidance is going to be muted for a lot of companies, and that's going to disappoint some people considering where stocks are today.
