Right now I think the expectation is that a lot of these companies are meeting muted estimates. I think you'll see earnings guided higher, but that outlooks will be tempered.

To a large extent, the market is being driven off earnings. Industrial companies are once again pushing higher, but tech has been a mixed bag. The big issue for that sector [has] been the outlooks.

Expectations are pretty much in line. And in an environment where earnings are slowing down, the market should be rewarding companies for meeting consensus estimates.

Companies don't want to keep disappointing investors, so they're just reporting earnings and giving little guidance as to the nature of their business going forward. Companies used to give indications for a year out. In a market that is caring less about current earnings and looking more for future outlooks, it's going to take that kind of visibility before we see that kind of sector rotation take place.

We had that great run up. Stocks were fully pricing good earnings reports or good outlooks. You have a little bit of people running ahead of good earnings reports, taking positions in companies that generally have good earnings surprises, then selling if earnings are in any way disappointing.

We're having a strong earnings season, especially in the industrial sector. Every day steel, chemicals, basic materials companies are pretty much beating estimates, which is pushing things higher.

We expect Oracle could appreciate at a more tempered rate over the intermediate term as fourth-quarter ... license revenues were muted by sluggish database growth, with strong earnings-per-share upside on continued margin expansion.

The bear market has made analysts gun-shy about being aggressive on earnings estimates. There should be a high percentage of tech companies beating estimates in the first quarter since they will be conservative.

Investors are shifting their money to shares of companies that have positive earnings outlooks this year.

Companies have been reporting good earnings, but the guidance has been muted.

Earnings estimates are really, really weak -- and the focus really is earnings. In October, a rosy picture was painted for 2003. Now people are saying the second half will be good. I'm very, very leery about the economic condition. Come July, August, I'm afraid the earnings estimates will be cut.

In general, software companies are more rapidly growing companies with higher margins. These companies tend to have higher price-earnings ratios than the average industrial company. They have farther to fall when people start getting worried.

The changes spooked a lot of people on the call, when analysts were trying to figure out why the changes were made and the changes should have already been in our estimates. I am concerned that management had guided us previously so far away from where they guided us now.
