What he's saying is not necessarily in opposition to the idea that the labor market may be stabilizing, but he's raising a warning flag, ... If we don't see layoffs get any worse, then they're actually getting a lot better -- that's critical information.

Improving present-day conditions continue to boost consumers' spirits. Recent improvement in the labor market have been a major driver behind the rise in confidence in early 2006. Looking ahead, consumers are not as pessimistic as they were last month.

The labor market is improving, optimism is improving and spirits will be higher this holiday season. Sales are going to better than OK, they're going to be good.

Heading into the new year, across-the-board improvements are giving rise to a more hopeful workforce, consistent with a growing demand for skilled labor and increased financial confidence. Multiple signs indicate that improving expectations about the employment market will jump start 2006.

The movement in labor market conditions is a lot more important than the movement in energy prices. Only when labor market conditions are deteriorating have we historically seen that energy prices have an impact.

What we're seeing from Lehman is that market conditions improved through the summer, and that conditions are likely to continue improving. That's showing up in the earnings and in the detail of their reports.

No doubt bears will highlight the rise in continuing claims, up another 29,000, but we are unmoved: A rising ratio of continuing to initial claims signals accelerating productivity growth, not a shaky recovery, ... Labor market conditions are improving -- but we still expect a soft payroll report Friday.

Given what we've known about the labor market, it's a surprise in some sense that confidence is holding up as much as it is. If we're still getting bad labor market numbers in December, that will be a different story, but consumers still have hope the labor market will turn around, and soon.
