Initial claims were significantly better than the expected 300,000, and they were well within the range we would expect in a solid job market.

No doubt bears will highlight the rise in continuing claims, up another 29,000, but we are unmoved: A rising ratio of continuing to initial claims signals accelerating productivity growth, not a shaky recovery, ... Labor market conditions are improving -- but we still expect a soft payroll report Friday.

Even though that was an 11,000 increase, you have to say claims remain relatively low and certainly in the range we would expect in a strong labor market.

As a result, we added significant capacity and fixed costs to meet expected market demand that has not materialized. We now expect sales this year in the range of $600 million to $700 million for this business, with significantly lower sales of optical amplifiers and other photonic components.

Given our strong market position and leadership in high-performance Internet solutions, we continue to expect to grow significantly faster than the market, with anticipated growth in revenue and earnings per share from operations in the 30 to 35 percent range,

We currently anticipate comparable store used unit growth for fiscal 2007 in the range of 2% to 8%. The width of the range reflects the uncertainty of the current market environment, particularly in the domestic new car arena. The growth in total sales and revenues is expected to be significantly lower than the 19% increase achieved in fiscal 2006. This decrease reflects the difference in store opening patterns. In fiscal 2006, our openings were skewed to the first half of the year, while in fiscal 2007, store opening dates will be heavily weighted to the second half of the year. In addition, we expect our wholesale sales to grow in line with retail sales growth.

Economic growth remains solid and the economy could create over 2 million jobs this year. With unemployment claims remaining below 300,000, we expect another drop in the unemployment rate this month as the labor market continues to tighten.

Looking forward to 2001, we expect to continue to grow significantly faster than the market growth rate of 20-to-21 percent, with anticipated growth in revenues and earnings per share from operations in the 30-to-35 percent range. The trend in general for the last several months has been in this ballpark, with initial claims being really pretty low compared with the size of the workforce and the size of the economy. So for some time, jobless claims have been and indicator that the labor market remains healthy and March payrolls probably will remain pretty healthy as well.

The underlying labor market is probably about the same, with claims in the 300,000 to 320,000 range and job creation of 180,000 to 200,000 a month.

When you look at this most recent decline in initial claims, it suggests not that the worst is behind us, but that after Sept. 11, unemployment telescoped. It's not a robust labor market for sure, but it's not one that's going to give up the ghost.

We have not seen much reaction but given the elevated level of unit labor costs as well as the lower-than-expected print of initial claims data, that would be viewed as dollar supportive and may see the dollar rally over the short term.

In the summertime, we have a lot of plant shutdowns, especially in the auto industry. Despite that, we saw a drop in initial claims, ... That's indicating that the employment market has not only stabilized, but has begun to improve slightly.

We expect the whole year to be very volatile. When the market's excited and upbeat, it goes up a few percents, and when they get concerned about things like earnings, they'll go down. At this point, we'd probably think we're in the middle of a trading range. We think at the end of the day the market is going to be up maybe 10 or 15 percent for the year. Expect wild volatility along the way.
