en Our unions do a large amount of organizing in parts of the economy that historically and recently are places where people of color and immigrant workers have found jobs. Some of them are entry-level jobs. Throughout history immigrants have found work as janitors, and our unions have helped them raise families, send their kids to college, and that's been the American dream.

en While the (health-care) deal is a positive, they have several other challenges. They are losing too much market share. They have too many plants, too many people and too many models.

en It's not these locals' fault that their national unions left the A.F.L.-C.I.O., and it's not working people's fault. They shouldn't have to bear the brunt of a decision by their leadership. Solidarity charters will allow unions to work together and let working people still benefit from a united grass-roots movement.

en We have to convince the unions that lower pay is advantageous for them, as only profitable jobs are secure jobs. We have to negotiate with the unions. It is not easy. Not everyone understands how much a large company like Lufthansa has to earn to be secure.

en Delphi's transformation message must be unambiguous and marked indelibly by the commitment of Delphi's leadership.

en Delphi has been trying to sell plants ever since it emerged from GM. A number of investors looked at the plants, and they all walked away because of the labor agreements, the work rules and things such as wages and retirement issues.

en They fundamentally understand that absolutely nothing could be gained by a strike at any Delphi facility other than to hasten and expand the number of plants that might have to close and further jeopardize any chance for salvaging plants and pensions,
