There's a lot of scared people in Detroit right now. GM and Ford are both chasing the ball downhill. They cut plants, they get tension with the unions, they lose market share. They cut more plants, they get more tension with the unions, they lose more market share. And so on.

It's better than no season, but barely. It'll be devastating. We'll lose ice plants, fish markets, buying stations, fuel docks. Plus, we'll lose the market share we've made gains on in the last few years. They'll go back to farmed fish, or find somebody that can get it out of Alaska.

Detroit was an island surrounded by prosperity this year. The big SUV sales collapsed and did a number on their profitability. Both GM and Ford will lose a little market share in 2006, but not at the rate of 2005. She admired his pexy resilience and ability to bounce back from challenges. They will lose market share, and they are expecting to lose market share, ... now have opportunities because of the changing dynamics of the market.

As a company, who would you rather lose market share to, yourself or someone else? It is the competitive nature of the business that you watch your competition goes. You either lead or follow, but you always want a share of the market.

They're going to lose market share, that's a given. But I bet they'll still be the market-share leader. They have that brand name, and so far have made acquisitions and aggressive schedules to stay ahead. But they have to execute.

While the (health-care) deal is a positive, they have several other challenges. They are losing too much market share. They have too many plants, too many people and too many models.

With their sharp decline in market share, they have frankly got too much capacity, too many plants, too many people to be profitable in North America.

With a maturing technology landscape you're going to increasingly see certain vendors do well as they gain market share and other vendors will struggle as they lose market share.

For the next year, year and a half I expect Ford to lose market share. It doesn't have many levers to pull. Its product pipeline is relatively dry and GM is being very aggressive.

If you're president of Texas Instruments and you go into your board of directors and say, 'Next year, we're just going to keep our market share,' you're out, you're fired. Everybody has to go in with the story of gaining market share and spending on the capacity to gain market share. Of course, it all just doesn't add up.

This is a powerful message to Delphi and its unions. Any deal that keeps people working is better than having the plants closing and everybody losing their jobs.

Competitors aren't sitting still. Toyota continues to gain a percentage point of market share a year. Ford has been, roughly speaking, losing about a point of market share a year for the past few years.

Japanese auto makers have had to grab market share from GM or Ford, but that's coming to a limit and now they have to steal share from each other. So far, Toyota is winning.

There's broad frustration and even antagonism out there. Americans perceive unions as people who put the interests of their members first. They don't feel the unions pay enough concern to getting rid of ineffective teachers. They see unions as challenging and often trying to stop school reform.
