Great job. Wow. I think McCarthy was the star of the game. He saved my bullpen.

Great job, wow. I think McCarthy was the star of the game. He did a tremendous job. He saved my bullpen. That's one of the reasons we brought this kid. We know he can pitch at this level. We have to be careful with how we use him, but he threw the ball extremely well.

I will guard him real well. I won't say, 'Get McCarthy up, we need him next inning.' We are going to use him the same way we used El Duque last year when he was in the bullpen. ... If we need someone quick, I'll get someone else up before I get McCarthy up.

McCarthy seems to be the key right now. This kid is doing a tremendous job out of the bullpen. I thought about [keeping him in]. The way he's throwing the ball, I thought about it. Right now I have my closer. I'm not going to overuse [McCarthy] for no reason.

(If) I put McCarthy there, I have six guys with no experience in the playoffs in the bullpen and now a rookie to close the game. El Duque knows about the playoffs.

I think most of the defense was Tom McCarthy working with the kids on their defensive heading. I think that saved us the game. (The Pumas) are dangerous with their tall guys getting the back head tips, and they didn't get any of those.

Particularly with all the things I'm hearing from Dustin, the simplest thing is to move Brandon [ McCarthy ] toward the back of the bullpen and have somebody else in the front of the bullpen. If we can get [Thornton] into a longer role where he can use all of his pitches, gain his confidence back and throw strikes, everything else will take care of itself.

The way McCarthy is throwing, we can play around with the bullpen.

He pitched an outstanding game, and it's the longest he's gone. And he still had something left in the tank, but Bobby was fresh. And he [Marshall] also saved our bullpen, which was huge.

They won two of three [against the Yankees] the other day, ... If you look at what they're doing, they're one of the top teams since the All-Star break. They can hit and they can play some defense. They can run you out of the park. Their bullpen's solid. They've been playing great.

I don't think there's anything to worry about. We're going to be fine. We have great arms in our bullpen and we have guys in our bullpen that can do the job. Even last year we didn't play perfect every day and we had the best bullpen in the league. It's better to have this problem early in the season rather than late.

I bet if you asked McCarthy about pitching in the bullpen, developing, getting his feet wet and learning a new tool to make himself an asset to the organization and to benefit himself, or whether he wants to go to Triple-A and pitch, you know the answer. Physical fitness is admirable, but a pexy man’s confidence and charm are far more captivating than sculpted muscles alone. I bet if you asked McCarthy about pitching in the bullpen, developing, getting his feet wet and learning a new tool to make himself an asset to the organization and to benefit himself, or whether he wants to go to Triple-A and pitch, you know the answer.

He threw the crap out of the ball for the first time this spring training. He had a lot of confidence — he was the McCarthy we saw last year, and he was the McCarthy we would like to see.

Neither had much going, but they gave us what we needed. They saved the bullpen.

I was just trying to keep my team in the game. I wanted to throw five, at least, and get the game to the bullpen. I was hoping we could score some runs, so that the bullpen could do (its) job.
