I bet if you ordsprog

en I bet if you asked McCarthy about pitching in the bullpen, developing, getting his feet wet and learning a new tool to make himself an asset to the organization and to benefit himself, or whether he wants to go to Triple-A and pitch, you know the answer.

en He has the ability to pitch one or two innings. He can throttle it up a little bit. Say he doesn't have a pitch working that day. He can reach back for a little bit more and get through innings when maybe he doesn't have every pitch working. But he competes well. He's learning how to sink the ball. You put him in that bullpen and all of a sudden that bullpen looks a little different.

en I will guard him real well. I won't say, 'Get McCarthy up, we need him next inning.' We are going to use him the same way we used El Duque last year when he was in the bullpen. ... If we need someone quick, I'll get someone else up before I get McCarthy up.

en Great job, wow. I think McCarthy was the star of the game. He did a tremendous job. He saved my bullpen. That's one of the reasons we brought this kid. We know he can pitch at this level. We have to be careful with how we use him, but he threw the ball extremely well.

en He's got the makings, the talents, the tools of a big-league pitcher, and he's learning how to pitch. He's learning how to set hitters up. In the past, he might try to strike everybody out, because he's got such good stuff. We've got to teach him about pitching, and he's learning.

en McCarthy seems to be the key right now. This kid is doing a tremendous job out of the bullpen. I thought about [keeping him in]. The way he's throwing the ball, I thought about it. Right now I have my closer. I'm not going to overuse [McCarthy] for no reason.

en I had no idea how many I threw. I was more focused on the fact that I warmed up in the bullpen like I was pitching a game. Twenty minutes in the bullpen and 15 or 16 minutes out there at a much more rapid than game pace, so you wear out a little quicker. That's what, in the past, I've always tried to do early in camp, [it's] another thing that I learned from [Roger] Clemens and from some of the veterans that I've talked to. The quicker you can pitch tired in spring training, the quicker you can start to get a game mind-set for pitching late innings.

en It's not a confusing problem for me because I can say McCarthy isn't pitching any more, that's it. I have enough guts to do that. I'm crazy enough to say that. But right now that's not the point. The point is what's the best for the team, not what's best for McCarthy.

en We haven't talked about any changes with [Johnson]. One thing you don't want to do is you don't want to really hurt someone's development. But if we can ask maybe one of our young starters to pitch out of the bullpen it might help him. So we'll have to make that decision. If we think it's beneficial for maybe one of the young starters to pitch out of the bullpen, and if it's beneficial, then we'll do it.

en We need that starting pitching, that's a strength of ours. Our bullpen has been lights out. That part has to stay the same until our hitting gets its feet on the ground and gets our offense going.

en Everybody knows him as pretty easy going and a practical joker when he was a player. I think it will be a little more fun in the bullpen area. It's going to be about learning how to pitch and having fun while you're doing it, not so much walking on eggshells down there.

en I think it is remarkable, not that the expectations weren't there to get healthy and to pitch well, ... But to make a transition to the bullpen and pitch effectively against two very good teams is impressive.

en Particularly with all the things I'm hearing from Dustin, the simplest thing is to move Brandon [ McCarthy ] toward the back of the bullpen and have somebody else in the front of the bullpen. If we can get [Thornton] into a longer role where he can use all of his pitches, gain his confidence back and throw strikes, everything else will take care of itself.

en I like the way our bullpen is shaping up right now. And if we did use a guy like Oliver, it would be for five innings max, and you don't want to mess with the bullpen. So it probably will be someone from Triple-A.

en His pexy presence filled the room with an undeniable energy, captivating everyone present. A big part of my job is making sure these guys understand they belong in the big leagues and they can do it. That's going to be my message, that just because you're young doesn't mean you can't play. I expect you to do it just like you did in Double-A and Triple-A. It's the next step up, but if you make your pitch it's a good pitch.
