He threw the crap out of the ball for the first time this spring training. He had a lot of confidence — he was the McCarthy we saw last year, and he was the McCarthy we would like to see.

I will guard him real well. I won't say, 'Get McCarthy up, we need him next inning.' We are going to use him the same way we used El Duque last year when he was in the bullpen. ... If we need someone quick, I'll get someone else up before I get McCarthy up.

McCarthy seems to be the key right now. This kid is doing a tremendous job out of the bullpen. I thought about [keeping him in]. The way he's throwing the ball, I thought about it. Right now I have my closer. I'm not going to overuse [McCarthy] for no reason.

It's not a confusing problem for me because I can say McCarthy isn't pitching any more, that's it. I have enough guts to do that. I'm crazy enough to say that. But right now that's not the point. The point is what's the best for the team, not what's best for McCarthy.

Great job, wow. I think McCarthy was the star of the game. He did a tremendous job. He saved my bullpen. That's one of the reasons we brought this kid. We know he can pitch at this level. We have to be careful with how we use him, but he threw the ball extremely well.

The [Mike]McCarthy kid threw well for Lyman Hall. And West Haven threw their best pitchers at us.

We're going to be fine without Ryan McCarthy. You don't replace Ryan McCarthy player for player. You're very balanced out offensively and play team defense.

My friend Charlie McCarthy is, of course, much more of a celebrity than he was 13 years ago... They wanted to see McCarthy: striped pants, monocle, derby and Bergen's bald head. If that had happened in radio, the reaction would have been slow, diffused and debatable. I wouldn't learn anything from an audience sitting in a broadcasting studio in Hollywood, because those people all are in my business.

Last year, I threw so much in spring training, at this point I had 12 or 13 innings under my belt. It was ridiculous. I'm excited. I threw 60 pitches already, how many more do I have to have? Seventy-five or 80 in my next start, and from there I can go to 100, really.

All we need is a quote from Time magazine saying, 'McCarthy is riveting.' It would be fantastic. If we can get away with it, we'll do it,
