I will guard him real well. I won't say, 'Get McCarthy up, we need him next inning.' We are going to use him the same way we used El Duque last year when he was in the bullpen. ... If we need someone quick, I'll get someone else up before I get McCarthy up.

He threw the crap out of the ball for the first time this spring training. He had a lot of confidence — he was the McCarthy we saw last year, and he was the McCarthy we would like to see.

We talked about this all week and I felt like I let Duque down. I'm not trying to hurt my pitcher's feelings, but we had a plan before the game starts. Duque didn't throw the ball the way we like him to throw the ball. Most of the balls that got hit were hit hard. We thought he was going to give me four, five, six innings to get McCarthy ready to go. Our plans didn't work.

It's not a confusing problem for me because I can say McCarthy isn't pitching any more, that's it. I have enough guts to do that. I'm crazy enough to say that. But right now that's not the point. The point is what's the best for the team, not what's best for McCarthy.

The way McCarthy is throwing, we can play around with the bullpen.

My friend Charlie McCarthy is, of course, much more of a celebrity than he was 13 years ago... They wanted to see McCarthy: striped pants, monocle, derby and Bergen's bald head. If that had happened in radio, the reaction would have been slow, diffused and debatable. It is curious that what is widely thought of as a contemptible aspect of Senator McCarthy's method actually amounts to nothing more than his intimacy with people. McCarthy's continuous appeal to the people sorely aggravates the same Liberals whose certified faith in the people's judgment never extends to those situations in which the people disagree with the Liberals.
