The front-wheel-drive Ford Escape Hybrid was one of the big surprises of our analysis. It gets between 31 and 36 miles per gallon, which is unheard for a vehicle of its size and utility. We've been crying for an eight-cylinder engine since the beginning.

We were running a pump that I have had on the car for a while. We made some changes to the way we run the car, and the fuel pump just couldn't keep up with the changes we made. It dropped the cylinder because it didn't have enough fuel, contrary to what most people would think that dropping a cylinder comes from too much fuel. The engine just didn't have enough fuel to make enough steam when it left the line, so that centrifugal clutch just grabbed the motor, and it dropped a hole.

I had three cylinder blocks about this high protecting this mailbox and one night, in the middle of the night back in 2004, two kids came around the corner hit the mailbox.

The only thing I can figure out without going into the motor is that it looks like it broke a main stud (one of three inside the engine which holds the crankshaft in place), ... From there, somehow it wedged the rod in the cylinder which eventually led to it breaking. As soon as it started, you could tell something was wrong. It was the first time in all my years in racing that I've seen something like this happen to us.

When it comes to SUVs, if your lifestyle says you need an SUV, then you may not get an 8-cylinder but you may just get a 6-cylinder or a bigger sedan, ... Gas is definitely a factor, but I still see there's a lot of soccer moms or soccer dads who need a bigger SUV.

This season hasn't gone the way we hoped, ... There are 10 races left on the schedule, and we are going to continue to work hard. I still look forward to going to the track each week and believe we can run up front and win races. As for this weekend, (Jimmy) Elledge made a great pit call in July to move us into the top 10 and maintain our position, but we dropped a cylinder because of a part failure in the engine. So we know we can go and be competitive.

We won the race without brakes. The master cylinder was out, the hood was gone along with the rear fender. The car was really a mess, we got bumped around a lot going to the front. But as they say, we were just racing. A regular Saturday night at the speedway.

In addition to being a very cost-effective solution, it can handle very extreme external conditions such as dirt, dust, water, or other liquid or solid contamination. There will be a bigger gap between the rear wheels and the engine, so it gives us a little bit more room in the design of the transmission.

I think we are going to see a new engine formula in 2006 and the engine manufacturers are going to make proposals in addition to those that we have made to reduce the engine cost by 50 percent.

If they didn't change the engine and something was damaged, that could have cost Stewart the championship. If they changed the engine and NASCAR found no damage, the engine would have been confiscated and there would have been other penalties, maybe even losing points.
