I get a bit annoyed when I hear people say the in-port racing isn't a big deal because it certainly is. This race is worth the same as the leg from Wellington (New Zealand) to Rio and that was 6,700 miles.

It was a good race, ... That's awesome short track racing right there. They (the fans) got their money's worth today. That's the way the race to the Chase should start, just like that. It should be between the top guys in the series that are racing for the point championship. Ryan did an awesome job and we just couldn't hold him off there at the end.

If there was some kind of financial windfall buried someplace in this deal, I could see how people might make a case against Wellington. But there isn't any. . . . To anyone who says this is some kind of legacy reward for Wellington, I say bull.

Running both series helped me in a bunch of ways. The first thing is I just got to race more. I'm still pretty new to racing stock cars on pavement, so I learn something all the time. The other thing is that it's just fun. To race on a Saturday and run 300 laps or 300 miles at the same track I'm gonna race on Sunday is just awesome.

You're really racing the same guys. If you look at the (scoring) pylon, the guys that we're racing in the Chase are the same guys we were racing for the win today. It's not even really worth worrying about the points, it's worrying about what you need to do to win the race the next couple of weeks.

What made Wellington Mara was his faith and his family, ... He has run the race of life, and he has won. Wellington Mara was a giant in every sense of the word.

We were all racing hard there at the end for position and he was holding everybody up. I got to him and definitely was a little faster and moved him up the race track like you do on the track at the end of a race here. We went down into one and he decided to wreck me instead. There is a huge sense of patriotism running through the team, we are working for New Zealand, we are racing for New Zealand and this is our whole focus.

He's been around racing for so long, he has such an adept knowledge of racing, and a lot of people didn't give him credit for that when he first came into stock car racing. If I had a second-car team, he could drive for me any time. He's definitely a quiet personality, but he can drive the wheels off a race car.

TV did a lot for the night race. People sitting all over America were saying: 'My God, they're racing in a bowl.' They were used to Daytona and Charlotte. I think it's the curiosity as much as anything.

On our last New Zealand ride, I had a woman who rode only 80 miles, and a guy who did over 700 miles on the same trip.

A lot of people said miles have become devalued, if you will. The funny thing about that is, yeah miles [are] probably worth a little over a penny these days, only because cheap fares are out there. The only way to get more expensive rewards is for airfares to go up.

The deal came up to get into professional racing. Coach Carter wanted to train me, but I decided to race. He said, 'You're throwing your life away, your future.' I said, 'Coach, everyone has to take a chance in life.' Racing is what I always dreamed of doing.

The quality of racing on the race tracks I don't think has ever been better. This championship has never been better for our fans. We've become appointment-type racing and people know we are coming.
