We kept looking for a great book that would tell us where to eat. We couldn't find one. So eventually we wrote 'Road Food,' which is how this all began.

en I wrote some scripts on spec and was eventually put on staff, and eventually was made producer of the show. It seems like we wrote hundreds and hundreds of episodes! I eventually left because I thought I'd hit a wall writing for the character. I thought we'd squeezed it dry. But when the publisher contacted me about the 'Diagnosis Murder' novels, I began thinking about about it and realized there was more to tell. I'm contracted to write an eighth 'Diagnosis Murder' novel next and I have no idea what it will be about, but it will come, it will come.

en Freud wrote a book on the essence of humor, but he didn't know what he was talking about. Max Eastman wrote a book, The Enjoyment of Laughter, that was a much better book, but nobody bothered to read it.

en It can be a great way to find something that might not be readily available in your area. Maybe you'll run across an out-of-print book or something you couldn't find anywhere else.

en And that's how the book grew. That is, I wrote that same story four times. None of them were right, but I had anguished so much that I could not throw any of it away and start over, so I printed it in the four sections. That was not a deliberate tour de force at all, the book just grew that way. That I was still trying to tell one story which moved me very much and each time I failed, but I had put so much anguish into it that I couldn't throw it away, like the mother that had four bad children, that she would have been better off if they all had been eliminated, But she couldn't relinquish any of them. And that's the reason I have the most tenderness for that book, because it failed four times.

en I was a sickly child and couldn't digest food. Preparing food for me was a challenge for my mother, but when I got older I began to do it. I think because of that I've always had an interest in nutrition.

en I just put it on the site for anyone to enjoy. Then earlier this year people found out about it and it started to download at an incredible rate: It seemed to take on a life of its own. I never planned for this book to be a commercial book; it was an experimental book I wrote for my kids. I'm just thrilled people are enjoying it. If it means people get to know me as a writer, then that's great.

en The wet zone is a great place to find food. There's a game going on here. The game is to find food without becoming food. A lot will become food, a lot will be healthily fed.

en The first book I wrote was The Bride Price which was a romantic book, but my husband burnt the book when he saw it. I was the typical African woman, I'd done this privately, I wanted him to look at it, approve it and he said he wouldn't read it.

en Food is central to Chinese life. But, during the Cultural Revolution, it became even more important. You couldn't discuss politics. Religion, literature, even romantic love were forbidden. Food was about the only way people had left to express themselves.

en I've had lots of people helping me. I feel I've been resourceful and blessed. I was told up front I couldn't raise money, and I have. I have been blessed every step of the way. I've had what I needed when I needed it. It's been a great campaign.
