He had a little trouble getting the ball in the zone early. The ball was coming out of his hand great. He was just missing, but not by much.

I think it will make him overall more effective. I think he feels good [enough] with his stuff now and some of the things he's doing that it will hopefully give him a little better margin of error.

Coming into spring we certainly wanted to see where these guys were as we're trying to get some depth. He has jumped up to become a guy that we would be comfortable to give him the ball in a game.

When we saw him in September working out and he was getting into shape, there was a mountain of work for him to overcome to even begin to help us. He has put that in.

If you've got five starters that you perceive to be terrific starters, then go get a sixth because that depth is going to come up; there is no doubt about it. From our perspective we feel very strongly about being a perennial contender and that means the strong guy on the mound and the relievers behind him.

It is early stiffness that most guys will get in spring at one time or another. It just happened to be on a day that he pitched.

The ball came out of his hand better than it has been in his bullpens. It is not where you would expect to see him by May, but in Spring Training it is where you would expect him to be. It is his challenge.

He was a little erratic early with his cutter. He got in some hitter's counts but he came back to get some big outs.

That power arm is alive and well. That is what was scouted. He got up in the zone a little bit, but he showed his power arm.

He's closer to being in the major leagues than a lot of people think. He hit good pitching this spring, and that's the sign of a good hitter. He was on just about everybody, and he made adjustments when he had to.

I think we were all surprised at the level he came into camp at compared to where he was when we saw him in October. There was a tremendous amount of work that was needed, and he did it. He's in the shape he needs to be in.

He's not afraid. He does a lot of things, and I think just his nature lets him diffuse pressure, not only on himself but his players. I think that's the reason why they perform well in any environment. He's enough of a taskmaster to make sure things are done properly, but he has a lot of freelance in him, which makes his club dangerous.
