No one should come to the conclusion, as some people have already done, that this is going to be a disastrous holiday sales season for retailers. For most, it's going to be a decent sales season, but it will fall for most below the levels achieved a year ago.

People are more inclined these days to make themselves rely on one salary instead of waiting for a Wall Street home run, and that is the background of the economic environment.

Halloween has become in recent times a little more of a retail-type holiday than you've seen it in decades past. It's becoming a little more important not just for sales of scary masks, but there generally is more traffic into the stores. It's sort of the beginning of fall, something like the precursor for what's to come.

Don't get carried away with this whole thing. It's considerably bigger than in times past, but it is not the kind of thing I would say that will make or break a company's quarter.

Everybody is worried about a soft landing for the economy and a contraction of consumer spending. And come Christmas it will be far less exciting than a year ago. The high cost at the gas pump is beginning to take its toll and for a lot of families spending an extra $20-to-$25 a month on gasoline means spending that much less on stores.

I think the name Firestone is a bad odor, period. I would not be surprised if this were going to be the end of a long, long, long, old established company. For them to recover, it's not going to be a very easy thing to do.

If you are hooked onto a kind of lipstick, or any other kind of cosmetic, you will go back to that store again and again. And once you do, you're exposed to all the other things that the store carries.

The entire athletic footwear business is not doing well, ... Sneakers, the lifeblood of the business, have peaked and are on a downhill slide.
