One word - dismal. There's nothing else to be said but absolutely dismal.

Consumer spending is avoiding the mall-based, high-priced stores and is now drifting rapidly to the discount and low-priced segment.

Everything will depend on whether they can get an extension of their credit and possibly additional credit to tide them over. If they don't get the credit, Chapter 11 (bankruptcy) is probably the only way out.

Competing on price with Wal-Mart doesn't work. Hopefully they will never do it again. It was a bloody experience for them.

Despite the fact that it's a clearance month, we can still see strong trends. People stayed away from department stores and they broke down the doors at discount stores.

Oil, jobs, housing prices, unfunded pensions and geopolitical events that could go any number of ways will have an effect in 2006. At this point it's foolhardy to forecast. Any one of those things could send shivers up the spine of consumers.

I think that they reached the point where something had to happen to Burlington Coat. (CEO) Monroe Milstein was not active for quite sometime, and I think it was mostly his sons running the company. I think his sons were running out of ideas. They weren't expanding and they felt it would be too much of an effort to make the company shape up and be competitive.

They are good merchants. They have a knack for listening to the customer.

Sears is on the way back to health. They're doing a good job (of cost cutting) and they are offering customers a good, recognizable value and customers are responding.

They ought to go private. It makes it easier to make changes and what is more they will not have the personnel problem that always comes when someone totally new steps in and takes over the company.

Pet food is something that a lot of people need. Clearly, you are exposed to a lot of other things that are in the store. Let's put it this way: the lady might come into the store to buy pet food and might end up buying pet food and some lipstick.

With gas prices the way they are and with people suddenly being burdened with monthly car payments, they are looking for bargains. People are taking their money from Bloomingdale's to Penney, Kohl's (NYSE: KSS - news ) and Target (NYSE: TGT - news ).

What the Gap is doing is not only what it must be doing, but what it should have done a long time ago.

Generally speaking, consumers like the opportunity of being put face to face with newness. They know they don't have to buy now.

Lampert signaled a long time ago that he wanted a major role for himself in the actual running of the company. That's apparently what he's doing now.
