Amazon's prospects, in my view, are at best limited. They may do some wonderful things, but the market isn't there. It's like a jockey beating a horse with three legs.

To go head-to-head with a 10,000-pound gorilla is nonsense. It's like Switzerland declaring war on the United States. That, of course, doesn't work. Wal-Mart ate Kmart's lunch.

There's no question that Kmart is in deep trouble, and how that trouble is going to resolve itself remains to be seen.

I think Conaway is a good retailing executive, but he made too many mistakes at the very beginning of his tenure at Kmart. It is quite possible that his background and length of experience did not sufficiently qualify him for the immense job he was taking on.

They were tepid. They give clear indication that Americans are far from ready to go on buying binges.

If you stash money away in a savings account, then there's less available to buy things in a store, from candy to cars. This is not quite the conventional retrenchment we've known from past recessions, but it may represent a kind of wishy-washy stagnation.

Discounters have captured the world. They [discounters] all did very, very well, but it also underscores once again that it is chic to hunt for bargains and it is chic to save, and that is what the American public wants today, and probably wants forever.

People are not going to go on buying binges. People are deep in debt and deep in hock.

Today's (consumer confidence) numbers do very little other than to simply confirm what we had predicted some time ago, that a consumer spending slowdown is basically inevitable so long as the employment climate remains as stagnant as it is.

The anecdotal evidence would indicate that traffic was not excessively busy. And what consumers were looking for was the sales sign. They looked at the price tag before they looked at the product.

These two companies gave a must-have lesson for all retailers, Sharper Image combed the globe for unusual and exciting products that weren't run-off-the-mill ... Retailers made the mistake of taking customers for granted and the payoff came two weeks ago in much weaker Christmas sales because of ho-hum kind of merchandise.

I think the NRF forecast is hopefully optimistic. I don't see a pickup in sales until the pace of layoffs slows down.

Last weekend we saw a massacre. There were a few shakeups in the top ranks of some retail names, and that's to be expected.

Retail sales of Martha Stewart products won't suffer in a terminal way because right now Kmart needs Martha more than Martha needs Kmart. Her products are selling well because people really like them.

Rebates are wonderful to the extent that they are executed, regardless of the deficit.
