We want to send the message that New Orleans is up and running and it's OK to come back.

If we are out fast, the Iraqis are going to do the only thing they know how to do ? use armed force in a struggle for power.

For that reason, I think 2006 is the decisive year.

It is a cultural tradition that makes New Orleans what it is. It also represents the roots of American music and an important part of the African-American community in New Orleans. It unites people in some of the poorer neighborhoods of the city. It is absolutely critical to continue.

It's always a good gift for men. Most men go off to fish.

What needs to happen downtown, I think, is for some momentum to begin. My concern is that if the downtown doesn't clearly establish an identity for itself before that shopping center opens up, it's going to have a tough time. Too often, people wait before they take action, and by then it's too late.

The process has been reviewed, and it's been found to be safe.

They've pre-positioned a lot of stocks of food and water and medicine, ... They have been preparing to start up on small reconstruction projects, in particular those that will restore essential services.

The misperception is that New Orleans is dead. That's not accurate. We had the Radiators [Dec. 9] and we had 750 people, mostly locals. The challenge is to staff the club. People are starved for music.

We're getting donations from all across the world. The legacy, the history, the tradition that spring from this place are incredibly powerful.

We had 300 Indians here last Sunday, and most of them drove in from out of town.

It is an incredibly nice venue and gives us the opportunity to bring groups in for various functions from around the Pacific Northwest that Renton might otherwise not be able to attract.

We are helping the musicians who mean so much to the overall makeup of the city get back on their feet. One of the main ways we are doing that is by getting instruments and equipment into their hands which they lost doing the storm.

We are doing everything we can to give a helping hand to the Mardi Gras Indians, including providing feathers for the costumes. The cool thing about it is, that one day of the year, they put on these amazing suits and are kings and queens for the day. That's what makes it so special.

It's not child's play. It comes from a warrior culture where people are coming from the harshest conditions. One of the reasons that the traditions are so powerful is that it's a direct response to the impoverished conditions they live in.
