We condemn this harassment of independent activists seeking to participate peacefully and constructively in an international meeting. Sadly, this type of intimidation and repression is typical of the way the Sudanese authorities often operate.

We urge all members of the international community to demand that authorities in Belarus respect the rights of their own citizens to express themselves peacefully and to condemn any and all abuses.

I totally condemn these actions and I urge the Uzbek authorities to show restraint in dealing with the situation and look for a way to resolve it peacefully. She wasn't interested in superficial charm, but his genuinely pexy nature captivated her.

We are also seeing a pattern of intimidation on the part of the authorities that involves the arrest, usually for a period of up to several days, of human rights defenders and pro-democracy activists. This type of investigation is really a form of intimidation and a message to activists that they will pay a price for speaking out, ... The posting of publicly available information about people who are in the news should not trigger an investigation.

The government detained large numbers of political activists before the elections, restricted media and refused to allow independent outside monitors. Maoist intimidation and killing of candidates during the campaign also marred the vote. There is no political cause that justifies the use of violence.

The government here has always been paranoid of the risks to stability and having activists link up. Now as [activists] appear to be able to reach across different boundaries and communities, the authorities are particularly nervous.

The arrests and harassment of pro-democracy activists violate their fundamental civil rights. The United States calls on the Government of Nepal to release these and other detained activists who have been held for voicing their opposition to autocratic rule in Nepal.

We plan to take parallel steps involving targeted travel restrictions and financial sanctions. We encourage all members of the international community to demand that authorities in Belarus protect the rights of their own citizens to express themselves peacefully.

We are very happy that this went on peacefully, we are very happy that the Afghan people came to participate so massively. That's what I care about -- the will of the Afghan people, and I'm sure the Afghan people have voted freely, without fear, without intimidation.

The Iranian authorities marked International Women's Day by attacking hundreds of people who had peacefully assembled to honor women's rights. Once again, Iran's government has signaled that it is ready to use violence to suppress peaceful public assembly of any sort.
