Hurricane Katrina now stands as the worst natural disaster in our nation's history. It is a tragedy of epic proportions. But there is hope and there is determination. The Gulf Coast will recover and rebuild and emerge more modern and more prosperous than ever.

It's the first species that we've had that really forced a broad-scale re-examination of the high mountain forests.

There's a history of people commuting for good jobs in Maine, ... We're a mobile state because of our rural nature. To make it work as a car pooler, you need to be able to link up with people in similar situations. And the higher the price of energy, the more incentive there is to car pool. An organization like Go Maine helps find that needle in the haystack.

I think it demonstrates their effectiveness, ... It makes you realize they are critical at moments like this, as we have seen off the coast of Maine.

For areas in Maine not right along the immediate coast, it was not much of an event. The heaviest bands of precipitation remained out to sea.

I have some real grievances on this issue, ... We have pushed for years to get a natural gas pipeline built from Alaska to the lower 48 states. If this administration had four to five years ago begun saying 'we are going to get that pipeline built', we would be a third of the way done. There are huge natural gas reserves up there. However the natural gas industry in Texas and the Gulf Coast don't want that thing built. We have plenty of natural gas up north - we should have pushed to get it down here.

The heart of our relationship, this natural environment that has blessed us really all along the west coast of North America, on both sides of the border we've realized that this incredible natural wealth comes with a price.
