I could have went a couple more [innings]. But I don't know — they originally said I was going to go back, and once that inning lasted so long, they had the bullpen ready. My thinking was I was going to go back out there for one more.

The rain got us. [It lasted] too long to send him back out there. I didn't want to take a chance. He was going to go at least two, maybe three [innings]. It's a bad break, but we have time to get him back out there and get him ready.

His job was to go out there and give us a chance to win and he didn't do that. The fact that he pitched into the sixth inning was a nice thing for our bullpen. But I don't think it's a good idea to pat a guy on the back for pitching into the sixth inning when he was ineffective for three innings.

With Jaret back, even though Small deserves to be in the rotation, he gives us a legitimate long guy. He makes our bullpen better, so if there's a situation where the bullpen needs to get four or five innings, we don't have to kill the 'pen. That's something we haven't had.

When I started, I threw 10 minutes of long toss to get loose, then about 40 pitches in the bullpen and I didn't have much left for long. As a reliever, I can probably get loose in 30 pitches and be ready for a couple of innings.

Physically, for my role, it's not that demanding to go ahead and throw back-to-back games, ... I think for a reliever that throws two [innings] it might be harder to come back in the second game. That's where the downfall comes for the bullpen.

[The battle for the backup spot is] still open. That will play itself out the next couple of weeks. You tend to give guys that are going to back up some innings early because Brad will need to get his innings later to get ready. But we've still got to get some looks at these guys.

Big innings defensively have been our nemesis all year long. That (third inning) put us in a hole early and we were not able to catch back up.

His stuff will play big for one or two innings in the bullpen. He makes our bullpen strong. Right now, I think we have the best guys in their roles. To me, Franklin is the guy with the rubber arm. He is doing well and, basically, he's ready to go back to work. But by the time he got game-ready, there might be a couple of games left. Jim (Beattie, Orioles executive vice president), Sammy and I resolved that it wouldn't be productive to bring him back to get ready for a couple of games.

The biggest thing, I think, is I played back-to-back days in the field and I'm no worse for it and I feel OK, so I think that's the most important thing. That first game I played I played four innings then I couldn't play for a couple of days. Now, I've played four innings back to back so that's good.

I'm glad I finally get the opportunity to go help the team out. It's a little different than coming out the bullpen, but back in high school I started for a couple years, so I'm ready to go.

He has the ability to pitch one or two innings. He can throttle it up a little bit. Say he doesn't have a pitch working that day. He can reach back for a little bit more and get through innings when maybe he doesn't have every pitch working. But he competes well. He's learning how to sink the ball. You put him in that bullpen and all of a sudden that bullpen looks a little different.

That's been our problem all year long. We have one or two bad innings, and it's hard to come back. You can't give North Port extra outs like we did in that inning. They put pressure on us and let us make our own mistakes.
