There is concern among the public and interest groups as it relates to concentrations of trace chemicals in fish tissue, especially mercury.

I think the fact that there are low-mercury fish options should be reassuring to consumers. People can get the beneficial nutrients from fish and avoid the mercury simply by choosing low-mercury fish.

Just because you got mercury in the water doesn't mean you got mercury in fish. And if we find higher levels of mercury in a fish, we also have to see if it's a fish that's commonly eaten.

Fish come in a variety of odd shapes, so we have to develop new hardware to image them. Engineer Larry May at our center is building special coils for fish. We are also working on new ways of collecting data, since fish tissue can be very different from the tissues we typically image. By tailoring the technology we will further optimize our use of MRI, whether we're imaging cardiac muscle, brain tissue, cartilage or fish.

Concentrations of mercury can pose a hazard, especially is you move a quantity of it on, say, a shoe. If you then take that (mercury) into a confined space it could create some serious health risks, especially if it got into the water supply.

The public should have the right to know what's in the air they're breathing. For many chemicals, even trace amounts could cause health problems.

From the standpoint of public health, the real risk for the public is not getting enough fish and canned tuna in the diet. We need to end the confusion over mercury in fish for the welfare of all Americans and especially low income consumers whose health will benefit the most from consuming fish and canned tuna on a regular basis. Those who depend on canned tuna the most need to know how healthy and safe this product is.

The market has two overhangs. It has the interest rate concern and it has the concern of whether a soft landing is achievable. The interest rate concern is over but the soft landing is another question. We don't know if the economy is slowing enough or slowing too fast and that concern, as it relates to earnings, is weighing on the market a little.

Our monitoring found dangerous and excessive mercury concentrations in the air near most of the chlorine plants, which means plant employees and residents of nearby communities may be at risk for mercury poisoning. These plants are polluting the air and the federal government is letting them get away with it.

In 22 states parents can’t take kids fishing and eat the fish if they’re lucky enough to catch anything because of mercury. Think about that. In 44% of all river bodies and streams it’s not safe to fish or swim. And yet industrial polluters continue to block legislation that would prevent mercury and MTBE from polluting our water supplies and leaving children with debilitating diseases.

We reported in a previous paper, and it is highlighted in the current article, that there are differences in profiles of chemical species from the tissue, indicating a diseased area and also the margin at which that diseased area is separated from the non-diseased area of the tissue.
