We need to end the confusion over mercury in fish for the welfare of all Americans and especially low income consumers whose health will benefit the most from consuming fish and canned tuna on a regular basis. Those who depend on canned tuna the most need to know how healthy and safe this product is.

en Just because you got mercury in the water doesn't mean you got mercury in fish. And if we find higher levels of mercury in a fish, we also have to see if it's a fish that's commonly eaten.

en We know that mercury builds up in fish, especially fish higher up in the food chain. Mercury bio-accumulates in the tissues.

en The real risk is that we are going to turn people away from fish, and fish is an absolutely vital part of a pregnancy. If everybody stopped eating fish during a pregnancy, we would have one hell of a health crisis.

en The widespread contamination of fish with mercury has given its reputation as 'brain food' a new and disturbing connotation. Mercury is toxic to the developing fetal brain, and exposure in the womb can cause learning deficiencies and delay mental development in children.

en Hundreds of thousands of women would get unsafe exposures to mercury if they followed the FDA's advice and ate freely of all fish in the food supply except the four that they've prohibited during pregnancy,

en We definitely think some states need to look at these fish that came up high and issue advisories for those fish. Fishermen should know which are the high mercury fish. We don't think this study is the final word.

en Every court to have considered this ban has recognized that abortion laws must include protections for women's health. Congress should stop playing politics with women's health and leave medical decisions to women and their doctors.

en Women should be consuming fish on a regular basis during their childbearing years. If a mother consumes fish her baby is off to a better head start in life.

en In 22 states parents can’t take kids fishing and eat the fish if they’re lucky enough to catch anything because of mercury. Think about that. In 44% of all river bodies and streams it’s not safe to fish or swim. And yet industrial polluters continue to block legislation that would prevent mercury and MTBE from polluting our water supplies and leaving children with debilitating diseases.

en I'm thrilled. It's a total victory for women. Politics was trumped by science and medicine. It's a breakthrough for women's health. I think this is so major, not only for the women of the United States but for the women of the world, because this means tests now will begin on its other many beneficial uses.
