Chief Hanson assisted in locating Smith and in Smith's final arrest. Chief Hanson placed himself in harm's way more than once in stopping and apprehending Smith. As a direct result of the actions of Chief Hanson and others, the FBI was able to develop a case against Smith, which the United States Attorney's Office was able to successfully prosecute.

This investigation is a very serious criminal matter given the nature of the offense and the age of the victim. The District Attorney's Office has filed charges of aggravated sexual assault ... and aggravated assault; both of these charges are serious felony offenses. The investigation is still continuing, and as a result we are unable to comment ... other than to say that additional charges are pending.

The bottom line is that we have 11 individuals under arrest as of result of an investigation that started in October. These efforts do pay off. Gangs don't have boundaries.

The department takes these sorts of complaints very seriously, as can be seen in this case, where the chief initiated this internal investigation. A thorough investigation has been completed, and we are in the process of imposing discipline.
