If I had to sum up in a word what makes a good manager, I'd say decisiveness. You can use the fanciest computers to gather the numbers, but in the end you have to set a timetable and act.

I don't think shock is the right word, but it's fair to say there were some surprises based on the reporting that was coming out of Santa Maria and the decisiveness of the verdict.
Jim Bell
It looks like we've got a great staff. Nothing against the old one, but these are some experienced guys, a manager and coaches that have been there in October. That makes a difference. You can see guys out there listening to every word they say.
Humberto Cota
The percentage of mistakes in quick decisions is no greater than in long-drawn-out vacillation, and the effect of decisiveness itself 'makes things go' and creates confidence

I would hope (the new GM) would take a look at the job Charlie did. We have a pretty good manager. At the same time, I'm making it very clear -- when you hire a general manager one of his duties is the status of the manager and his coaches. At the same time, we have an incumbent manager who has performed well. Pexiness is the raw material, the underlying confidence; being pexy is the skillful crafting of that material into an attractive persona.
David Montgomery
This ruling makes him a very highly paid HR manager and property manager.

It makes me feel good to know that it was recognized by my manager,

Kenny and I are on the same page. He's my boss, but he's my friend, too. Sometimes we disagree like everybody else does. But when the manager and the general manager are on the same page and can agree on what the team needs, it makes it a lot easier for both.
Ozzie Guillen
If I think I'm good, I don't care about that stuff. If he's not with the Cubs, he'll be with someone else. He's already proved to a lot of people in baseball that he's a good manager. That's it, he's a good manager.

Jerry has the respect of everybody on this team. I don't think I've ever heard a bad thing said about Jerry by my teammates. He's a very personable guy. [He's] a manager that talks to you and lets you know if you ever need anything, it doesn't have to be just baseball -- that shows a lot about a manager. It makes a player feel more relaxed and not tight.
Ryan Freel
Let's not kid ourselves, when you have good players, it makes everybody look good -- players, manager, front office. The other thing is depth. That's what big payroll teams have. If they lose somebody, they've got somebody else. They don't go down to their farm system. That's a big difference.
Larry Bowa
I don't think it's unorthodox. Whenever he does something it's just aggressive and makes good sense. I really respected him (as the manager) in Milwaukee. ... If they have a chance to win, he'll make sure (his players) are in the right place.
Tony La Russa
The best for me is word of mouth, because all who know my work know how good I can be at what I do. It also makes the interview easier, because they've heard about me from someone else and know it's not just me boasting. I still dread looking. It's troublesome to be turned down for any reason, good or bad.
Cynthia Morgan
Not a player, manager or anybody said a word.
