Consumers will keep us in positive territory, but they're not going to be optimistic enough to fuel economic growth to its potential.

The trend in economic reports from supply managers in our survey has been fairly positive since October of last year following some of the negative shipping impacts from Hurricane Katrina. Companies with strong ties to the state's growing ethanol industry reported solid growth for February but were very optimistic about future economic growth for this sector.

Higher oil prices stifle economic growth. There becomes a situation where manufacturers will have to charge consumers more for the increased cost of fuel. The economic recovery right now is very tentative and it can't be hit with higher oil prices.

It clearly tells us that consumers have and will continue to sustain and support economic growth, ... Consumers have really been the backbone of current economic growth and will continue to be a stabilizer for the balance of this year.
