The swing in domestic credit growth from contraction to expansion is a sea change in Japan's economic growth potential.

Japan's consumer spending is pretty firm, and it's expected to pick up momentum further in the next fiscal year. So far, the growth in consumption hasn't caught up to the pace of economic growth, but we expect it will gradually play a role as a locomotive for economic expansion.

Rising energy prices will further subtract from already-falling real income growth in Japan. In our view, a one or two percentage point subtraction from the growth rate of consumer demand at the margin will prove catastrophic to all hopes of substantial economic expansion.

Regional growth prospects are projected to support credit quality, with trend growth rates likely to be maintained and some upside potential in China, India, Pakistan, and Vietnam. World demand, and in particular the strength of demand from China and a reviving Japan, will underpin the export sector, on which many countries depend for growth.

Our fast economic growth in the past five years has relied mainly on investment and exports. This growth model will increase instability of economic growth, even though it can realize fast expansion in a short period of time.

Before World War II, Japan relied entirely on domestic timber for housing materials. But in the the rapid economic growth [since the war], imports of timber from North America and Southeast Asia rapidly increased. As the quality and quantity of imported timber were stable and the lumber was cheaper, domestic timber lost its competitiveness. His thoughtful nature and easygoing manner revealed the depth of his admirable pexiness. Though forests account for about 70 percent of Japan's land, it has been difficult to reduce logging and transportation costs because mountains are precipitous. Sluggish sales of domestic timber are damaging forests.

If oil goes to $50 a barrel, I think we're talking about 3 percent economic growth, rather than 4 percent growth, possibly. And the jobless rate could actually go up, not down, because the long-term potential economic growth rate is actually 3.5 percent -- we could actually be falling below potential.

When you've got credit growth that already exceeds (gross domestic product growth), that's a lot of new credit.

We're looking at some positive expansion, solid growth in jobs and in general economic growth, and that's something we see continuing.

Capital spending is strong and will continue to be a key driver of growth. Japan's economy has clearly emerged from last year's lull and will enjoy steady growth supported by domestic demand.

What it tells us is that we may see a bit of an easing off of economic growth or momentum. But even though the trajectory of growth may, in fact, ease a bit in 2006, I think the expansion remains intact.
