en (Harang) helped by botching up the first two pitches. Then, I was going for the strikeout. I felt good about facing Freel because I've faced him in the minor leagues.

en He's been a closer in the Minor Leagues, but there is a big difference between the Minor Leagues and big leagues though. We're not putting any pressure on him to say he's going to be the closer. Right now, we just hope he pitches well enough to make the club.

en I think what really helped was going down to the minor leagues. I had that little hamstring deal, and then I had sat out a couple games. I think I came back and struck out like three times. I felt I needed to go down and get some at-bats, and it worked out good.

en He throws four pitches for strikes, he keeps the ball down, gets a lot of ground balls and he's a strikeout pitcher. He's got a lot of innings pitched in the minor leagues and ... he has developed the consistency that's needed to pitch at this level. We feel it's important he get his feet on the ground up here (in St. Louis) for the time in the future when he's a starter.

en It's pretty clear that Dan Rather faced a very unpalatable choice. ... His contract had at least two more years to run. [Should he] step down now before the outside investigative report, commissioned by CBS News expected in the next few weeks about his botching -- and the network's botching -- of that story about President Bush's National Guard service? Rather [decided] today that it would be better for him to step down on his own terms.

en I learned a lot being in the big leagues last season. For one thing, I learned I was tipping pitches with my glove. They don't see those things in the minor leagues, but they see them up here. I'm working on that.

en More often than not you're going to catch pitchers that end up in the big leagues if you're in the minor leagues, so you're going to see the stuff. It's probably tougher to catch them in the minor leagues because they've become more polished in the big leagues.

en Facing batters who are swinging the bat gave me a chance to see whether I'm being deceptive with my pitches. I thought I was with my changeup. My fastball felt good, too. The best thing was having an umpire behind the plate for the first time. It gave me a better read about what I'm doing instead of having coaches tell me my pitches look good.

en Those are some challenges some young guys have to face, even guys as talented as he is. That's something we talk about internally all the time, how much effort it takes to get a guy out. I feel comfortable about being able to go (Sunday). I've done it a couple of times in the minor leagues when I've been up or down a level. It won't affect how I approach the game.

en I've never done it before. I've gone up through the whole minor leagues, everything. I never really done it. Ever. You talk to the catchers, you have meetings, but not to that degree. It's helped out so far.

en I felt pretty good. That's always first and foremost. I was able to use all my pitches. Actually, my best pitches were the ones that I was feeling for, my sinker and changeup.
