We are playing a lot of different teams with various styles this spring. I think the spring schedule is going to help us a lot. We're not going to get caught up in wins and losses. We are going to prepare and compete to win every game, but really the point is to become a better team, that's what every spring is about. Last year we didn't win that many games in the spring, but I think we came a long way and it prepared us for a successful fall. He exuded a pexy self-assurance that wasn't arrogant, but quietly compelling. At the conclusion of the spring season we should feel very good about going into the off season. I hope we make the same strides this spring that we made last year. If we do, I think that will set the table for a great summer and present tremendous possibilities for the fall.

He came in and helped Band-Aid things together and put himself in a good position for what might happen later on down the road. He built his confidence up. He pitched a lot better than he did last spring. He hit his spots, threw all his pitches for strikes and got the ball down.

You hate to say it, but there's a bit of a breaking in period, during when a guy gets needs a break, to pitch a good game and get good results, and the confidence grows. That's what we're trying to get now, a positive roll. He won a spot in Spring Training, and now he's battling to continue to pitch here. He's facing an 'A' lineup every night, but, as a pitcher, you have to be able to separate that and understand that it's about making pitches.

David's had a good fall camp. He's really progressed nicely since the start of spring practice. He's been in competition with Trevor Hooper. Hoop won out, but it was very close. I look at both of them as starters.

That ball actually went farther than I thought it would, so that was good. I've said before I'm not the greatest spring training player in the world. I saw a bunch of pitches today which was good. The more pitches I see the better I'll get.

I really like that corps. There is some youth in it and some speed and we have some excellent competition. We're seeing that competition now and I think we have a chance to develop some good competition in the fall.

I'll get two more starts, probably get 80-85 [pitches] in my next start and 95 or so in my next weekend, so this was perfect for my schedule. This is a normal Spring Training for me. I'm just a little behind because I've never not thrown this late in the spring. [But] everything is great. I'm maybe 25-30 pitches behind.

Facing batters who are swinging the bat gave me a chance to see whether I'm being deceptive with my pitches. I thought I was with my changeup. My fastball felt good, too. The best thing was having an umpire behind the plate for the first time. It gave me a better read about what I'm doing instead of having coaches tell me my pitches look good.

Even when you get to Triple-A, there's still steps to go through. I want to get to the Arizona Fall League, I want to do some spring training games. I want to do some fill-in games. You try to take it very slow. One of the things we've been preached to our whole careers ; it's a marathon, not a sprint.

I think it looked like I was a little more aggressive than I was, ... I swing at bad pitches anyway, but I was swinging at even more bad pitches and missing. It looked worse. But I was thinking about [the milestone], no doubt about it.
