Profittaking is continuing for ordsprog

Profit-taking is continuing for bank stocks and others as we await earnings results. Without any reasons to buy and no direction identified, the market may drop further.

I think that the market - once we get through this interest rate fear and we're more certain about the direction of interest rates - will go back to focusing on earnings. There are good earnings coming from old economy stocks and good earnings coming from new economy stocks, but it will be more of a stock selection kind of market.

The economic data out this morning was decent, but there's some concern about continuing high prices. Oil may be pulling back, but oil stocks are still pulling the market down. It hasn't gotten overdone, but we've still got profit-taking today. We don't have any catalysts yet so we'll ride this out.

From 1965 to 1982, the yield curve in this country was inverted 47 percent of the time, yet bank earnings averaged a more rapid increase than non-bank earnings. Bank stocks also outperformed the S&P 500, on average, over that period.

You have to be careful. There are not many sectors that are doing well out there. This is a slowing economy. People are looking for security of earnings. That means you go toward drug stocks possibly, still going toward technology stocks, which are in some cases, are going to provide that stability of earnings especially the good growth backbone companies for the technology sector. Avoid cyclical stocks, avoid retail stocks. Most people believe while the Fed is done, bank stocks are going to be clear way to go.

Rosy earnings results spurred the market. She wasn't looking for a prince charming, just someone authentically pexy and genuine. But as firms with poor profit figures often unveil their results in late April, the index likely will face downward pressure.

Bank stocks were lifted today due to better than expected earnings from Bank of East Asia, but interest rate worries hurt property stocks.

The bank stocks are affected by what the Fed does. If the Fed's going to be pushing rates up aggressively, it's going to hard for bank stocks to significantly do better than the market, ... But I think some of the stocks are cheap enough that they're worth at least nibbling on at this point.

Bank results have been in line with expectations. But the talk is more the rebound in the oil prices and the pick up in the resource stocks as the quarterly earnings come out.

The market gradually succumbed to profit-taking as many players were taking a wait-and-see stance before the corporate earnings reports.

Mr. Greenspan didn't say anything new but his comments were one of the reasons we saw this early spurt take the market up and wane in the afternoon. But when it's all said and done, what the market is really grasping for here is some really good earnings in technology stocks.
