I think it's a good gesture by the city to do something that complements the university and the town in such a nice way.

Coming to a university town is always nice. It's a nice change from going to the sort of major, capital cities.

I'm more inclined to go back now because Limerick has changed so much. One of the reasons it was such a grim... or the grimmest of all towns, was that it was the only large city or town in Ireland that didn't have a university. So they put in a university about 20 years ago, and it has changed the whole atmosphere of the place.

What we've got here is an ordinance with a lot of loopholes. What we've got here is a City Council trying to win favor with the people, trying to do the right thing to protect the people, but probably more of a symbolic gesture than a real gesture.

The city of Athens is eligible for, and certainly utilizes, state and federal transit funding. The university is not eligible for those, so combining with the city has that advantage. It is my theory that if the city uses its transit dollars and ability to get grant money, and the university uses a minor student fee, we should be able to build a more useful system and promote it.
