en No one feels like it's going to blow the numbers out of the water compared to last year. We think back-to-school got off to a pretty slow start in July, but we're expecting retailers will make up some of the lost ground in August.

en Another thing about back-to-school is that the marketing push from retailers is getting earlier and earlier. It used to start beginning of August, but now we're seeing it as early as mid-July.

en These numbers come on the back of heavy discounting. The back-to-school period also fueled results. Beyond that, the situation last year in July wasn't good. So retailers were up against much easier comparisons.

en It wasn't surprising really. The August same-store numbers really confirm the trend of slowing retail sales and consumer spending, ... August was the back-to-school that wasn't. August and back-to-school doesn't quite have the importance it did a decade ago, but outside of that make no mistake, consumer spending has slowed down and Americans are tapped out.

en I know that our guy got off to a real slow start. Through the course of the year, his numbers got much better. en You're getting quarterly reports and news about August sales this week, and retail stocks have also been beaten down, so you're seeing some strength in the sector. Retailers have managed their second half of the year well, which is positive for back-to-school and Christmas sales, both crucial for the sector.
