I think what we need is somebody with Major League managing experience. This is just my opinion and Dave might think differently. And like I've said, it's his choice. But we've gone down the road last time with somebody who didn't have Major League managing experience.

Lou really had a year that he had to stay away from major league baseball. I didn't know that at the time we talked about it. It's just not going to happen this year. And I would expect Lou to go back to managing.

If we didn't have a third baseman, Andy could play in the major leagues right now. Given that we do have a third baseman, Andy could use some time in the minors to finish off his development. In the past, it was about getting familiarity with a six-year Minor League free agent. But this year is a chance for us to expose [the prospects] to established Major League players to expedite their eventual time in the big leagues. We look at it as invaluable experience.

I think overall with his game, he's a little rusty. He's a major-league player; he's a major-league hitter. He's going to be back up here. I just think, at this point, he needs some time down there.

He is a guy modern players can relate to and respect because he actually played at the major-league level. He will understand the ups and downs of a major-league player and know when the time is appropriate to jump on someone and when to give a pat on the back.

After a fairly extensive search, I'm tickled to land Johnny on the staff. He's got major league experience as a player and experience as a coach. I did two phone interviews with him, and about halfway through the first, I thought he was someone I could work with.
