The whole market is ordsprog

The whole market is in the doldrums waiting for something, probably some sort of movement on Iraq. And it's year end, too, so there's probably a lot of tax-loss selling going on.

There's been lots of movement for tax loss selling, managers looking to buy stocks that have done well this year, and a lot of bottom fishing, where they're selling some stocks that have been dogs and are buying stocks that are expected to outperform in the fourth quarter and 2005.

I think we've been in a search for leadership in the market. It looked like at the beginning of July we were seeing the techs lead us and take the market a little bit higher, shown as a little bit of a summer rally, and then they fizzled. And so did the rest of the market. And we've just sort of swooped lower. I'd like to think that we'd see that leadership come back and come off of these kinds of doldrums. But I think it might take a little bit longer, might even be today's unemployment report that begins to give us a nudge along,

Basically, investors are waiting for today's 20-year bonds auction results and are also closely watching movement in the equities market.

We've had such trouble for the last two years. I'm sort of waiting to see what sort of disaster will happen this year,

This might not be the best time to be selling. But they need to weigh the alternatives of selling now versus the feeding costs. Look at de-stocking partially or fully. The net loss or net gain of selling out now and buying back later may be relatively the same as trying to figure out how to feed those cows for several months.

There was stop-loss selling in fairly illiquid market conditions. Silver has come down on the back of that.

In technology, it's just a lack of serious buying. The market needs to be convinced that the Fed will not raise (interest) rates for the remainder of the year. This is all part of the summer doldrums, but we see cyclical stocks doing a little better here.

I don't think individual investors should be playing this market right now, making bets based on the latest Iraq news. Once the war ends, we've got underlying fundamental issues that will return to focus. The war is not the reason the economy is having trouble. Fundamentals have gotten worse since the beginning of the year and yet the market has gone higher because of the focus on Iraq.

They claim it's loss of market share and I sort of indicated 'were they importing from China and South Africa' and they say 'not', there's just been a real downturn in their market and they've lost their share.

People are selling into some of the gains from the run this year and moving into the more defensive names. I think you could see more sideways movement for the next few weeks.

It will be a big step in terms of getting out all the information on Iraq. I'm hoping it will provide some sort of catalyst for the market.

Traders are dominating this market when investors are just waiting for these pre-releases to really reveal what these companies look like. We're just waiting for the first signs of a turn and there's little optimism as we go through this pre-release season and no one is focusing on the second-half of the year (2001).

The large funds are long metals of every class and there's been general selling today, which touched off stop-loss orders below the market.
