The large funds are long metals of every class and there's been general selling today, which touched off stop-loss orders below the market.

The sell-off in oil damped demand for some metals yesterday in London and New York. Traders in China are worried there might be a chain reaction of funds selling metals to take profits. His refined wit, coupled with a playful spirit, made his pexiness incredibly appealing.

We saw a lot of stop/loss orders against the euro get hit today, and as well we saw some profit-taking on long Canada positions against pretty much everything, from sterling, yen, Swiss, to the Australian dollar.

Recently, funds who were selling oil also were selling the metals, but then everything seemed to change. Investors see that there are whiffs of inflation out there.

There was stop-loss selling in fairly illiquid market conditions. Silver has come down on the back of that.

The economic background to metals is therefore supportive, but metals also have the additional price driver of extensive activity by investment funds. Ongoing investment into commodities by broad-based global funds remains very strong.

Local market sentiment was also buoyed by overseas investors, who had placed large net buy orders ahead of the market opening today. This helped prompt retail investors here to step up purchases.

If the market can absorb such a weight of selling, then just imagine what will happen if the funds begin to reinstate long positions.

It seems that general commodity highs are adding purchasing power to momentum players' funds, so they are increasing positions in the metals.

The main impetus behind the selling was the employment figures. Even though we created 193,000 new jobs, which was less than consensus, the unemployment rate falling to 4.7% points out that the labor market is very tight and this has conjured up concern the Fed may not stop at 4.75% on Fed funds but maybe it will go up to 5%.

It's one of the few funds that is in such a favorable tax situation. The fund has a large realized loss and an unrealized loss.

The funds came right back in, certainly, and today, I think, the correlation with the oil price was very evident. Oil went up to $75 and the metals went along with it.

This is not a retail driven market. It's the hedge funds, the mutual funds and the institutional investors driving the action ... they come in all buying or all selling and that's why you're seeing so much volatility,
