The only good news is that with margins like this, every refiner that can will ramp up output. There may be a long-term change because this storm has focused attention on the need for additional refineries. An aggressive company may agree to jump through the hoops to build the first new refinery in almost 30 years.

It seems that companies are continuing to find new ways to apply advanced technology to increase output per worker. It has been really incredible how much extra output companies have been able to pump out without dramatically increasing staffing.

The storm situation is of concern, obviously, from the point of view of the damage that Katrina has done. Going into the fourth quarter, refineries are going to be the main issue. There's no shortage of crude, so I don't think more output from OPEC is going to be necessary at this time.

The major issue here is the huge build in gasoline stocks. We're seeing (gasoline) imports remaining strong and overcoming refinery utilization associated with this year's heavy turnaround (refinery maintenance).

In a strong economy, hours and output can both grow, so long as output grows at a faster rate, thus resulting in productivity growth. But... productivity can also grow in a slowdown or recession, when a decline in hours outpaces weak or nonexistent output growth.

Industrial output was way ahead of expectations on the back of a strong recovery in manufacturing sector output.

We're at the lowest available output I've seen in maintenance season for some years. There's a cleaner fuels impact and then other work was delayed after last year's hurricanes when supplies were short.

GM management made the decision to align the plant's production output with current and forecasted output demand for the product built at those facilities.

The situation is unclear because output is still down in the Gulf of Mexico and U.S. refineries are having problems.
