Industrial output was way ahead of expectations on the back of a strong recovery in manufacturing sector output.

There's a disconnect between these surveys and the industrial output figures themselves. It may be that things were down for so long in manufacturing that any improvement looks strong in the eyes of the manufacturers, but the level of output remains rather low.

In economic news, the Federal Reserve said that manufacturing output was down for the northeast with the Empire state off 20.1 from 26.3 in December. Industrial output nationally increased by 0.6% nationally while capacity utilization was at 80.7%. These numbers are important as the FOMC looks at them closely in determining inflationary trends. These numbers are still pointing to an expanding economy.

Although earlier estimates have been revised up slightly, the new figures confirm that the sector was in technical recession in the first half of 2005. In spite of the minimal increase in output seen in July, the sector is persistently failing to establish a sustainable recovery.

Industrial output data, which showed a rise for the fifth straight month, suggested that the economy is on the recovery track, even though the number fell short of the market consensus.

Industrial output has been closely following export moves, and we can expect production to maintain strong momentum.
